I was in the Coast Guard and we have our MSST and PST's but thats it for the most part. The thing Ive always been confused on related to Gi-Joes and real life military. If a person is a Green Beret, they've obiously had the training. How does Ranger school factor in? Can you be both? My understand was you have to go Airborne, and then some other training schools before you ever get to Ranger school. How are the Berets differant? Special forces seems to be a really loosely used monicker now, and any clarifications would be great.
Im mainly confused about Beachhead. Ive seen people call him a Green Beret, then why does he carry a red one around on his shoulder? and according to some literature he's a Ranger. So whats up?

beach head is a ranger, who went to ranger school.to the best of my knowledge an airborne ranger is a ranger who has gone to jump school as a ranger.now a delta force operator is a ranger who is chosen in selection and completes delta force training.

Hey man,
I can answer this, but to be fair, you'd be much better off reading the "file card thread" because ALL of these questions - and the subsequent questions - are answered in detail. Second, you need to understand that Hasbro was NEVER good at getting the details of military training and/or beret color correct. For example, with the exception of Falcon, no Joe from '82-'94 EVER had the correct color beret.

First:
Special Forces is a term that is often misused. "Special Forces" means a specific type of Army soldier - those who have earned the 18 series MOS and are authorized to wear the famous "Green Beret". What happens often is that the term "Special Operations" is used synonimously... that is a mistake. "Special Operations" is a broad term for any "Covert" unit in the U.S. Military: SEALs, Green Berets, Rangers, etc. "Special Forces" is specifically the Army Green Berets.

Classically,
Stalker and Beach-Head are listed as "Rangers". That term is a bit ambiguous; it can mean a soldier who is in the 75th Ranger Regiment, or it can simply be a soldier who has been through Ranger school and is considered "Ranger qualified". However, in the comics and by the patch on Beach-Head's 1:18 sleeve, it is reasonable to understand that both Beach-Head and Stalker were members of the Ranger Regiment... in which case, in the 80's, both of their berets should have been black. Today, members of the 75th Ranger Regiment wear Khaki berets. Consequently, Both Stalker's Green Beret, and Beach-Head's Red/Maroon beret were incorrect. Hasbro just goofed. However, in his Convention Special "Tiger Force" file card, Beach-Head is listed as having a 18B military specialty - that means Army "Special Forces" and that means that he should have a Green Beret. Stalker is never specifically listed has being Special Forces qualified... he should never have had a green beret.

1. Member of the 75th Ranger Regiment 2. Any soldier who has completed Ranger School is considered "Ranger qualified" and can be called a "Ranger" Delta is different. Not all Delta Operators are Rangers or Ranger qualified, though many of them are. Delta Selection and Training is not dependent on Ranger School or any other specific qualification.

Like Oliver said, the term "Special Forces" is thrown around alot, but more or less any unit or group within the United States military that falls under the command of USSOCOM (United States Special Operations Command).

Here's how Berets work in the Army...
Black - Every soldier who is not authorized to wear another color beret wears a black beret; it's standard in the Army. However, in the 1980's and up to the mid 90's, regular soldiers did not wear berets at all, and black berets were reserved for members of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Maroon (NOT Red): Troops who are in Airborne Units (the 82nd & 173rd) and any members of Special Operations units who are not authorized to wear other color berets. Khaki: Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment who are actively serving in that unit. Green: Soldiers who have completed the Course at the Army Special Warfare Traning Center and earned the 18 Series MOS. This makes them members of "Special Forces" (as opposed to members of the Infantry, Artillery, Transportation, etc.) and the nick name for these soldiers is, of course, the "Green Berets".

Thanks for clearing that stuff up. Ive perused the file card thread but its a mess man and mostly off topic now. So what is the biggest differance between GB's and Rangers? Both are spec ops, can a Ranger go on and become a Beret? Or are these parallel career paths that dont intersect. In other words where do you go up from that point.
