Yeah, and Australia's version of the Marines are just called "Commandos". They're supposed to be pretty tough... a little more elite than our own USMC, but not as tough as the Royal Marines. Of course, that's just a rumor. I've never met any of them.

Wiki, we really do need to distil that thread down into a bunch of pages in something like a wiki to make the info more accessible to those who can't remember exactly which of the x-thousand pages holds the answer they are after

Yeah, I can't even imagine what a monumental task that would be.

Every continuity/file card question that I ever see pop up in a thread, has already been answered very well in the file card thread. If people would just take the time to read it, it would answer all their questions. And instead of starting new threads, people could just ask the guys over there and they could tell them.

If I'm remembering my military protocol correctly, Snake-Eyes would actually be grandfathered into the Ranger qualification due to his time as a member of a LRRP (Long Range Recon Patrol) in Vietnam. It is entirely possible that both he and Stalker (And Storm Shadow, for that matter) might actually be recipients of the rare and coveted (and now no longer used) "Recondo" Tab (Which I think it's a safe bet to say the Joe of the same name was intended to have). Either way, "Classic" Snake-Eyes LRRP experience is likely what earns him his "Commando" status (which his Ninja training just accentuates). Or I could be wrong on the protocol there where LRRPs and Rangers are concerned. As for Stalker, I've always assumed that despite the filecards he was in fact a Green Beret/Special Forces qualified. His list of skills (Particularly the languages) and combination of MOSes really do point extremely strongly in that direction. More pointedly they paint him as being a de facto Special Forces Medic. Though Stalker's "Talking Battle Commander" figure was in fact wearing the correctly colored beret for a member of the 75th at the time the figure was released (black). Quote:
Well, as far as I know any SF qualified soldier is allowed to wear their Green Beret in ANY unit in the Army, especially in a SOCOM unit. I'm only basing that on my time at Ft. Bragg. All the guys in 4th PsyOps and 96th Civil Affairs who were SF Qualified were allowed to wear the green beanie.
So, if anything, Beach-Head should be wearing a Green Beret as a Joe... and so should Flint, Duke, Falcon, etc. That is assuming that the Joes fall under USSOCOM. As for the Joes, I think it's kind of futile to try to apply traditional uniform standards of any type to them, given that they clearly don't follow them in the least. If Beach Head just likes the Maroon Beret, he wears the maroon beret. Last edited by Jmacq1; 01-01-2011 at 03:32 AM.. |

I think the "Green Beret if you want to" only applies within USSOCOM. During my own time at Bragg, guys who were "tabbed out" in the 82nd still wore the maroon beret despite having their Special Forces tab and having served on the teams, without exception. As for the Joes, I think it's kind of futile to try to apply traditional uniform standards of any type to them, given that they clearly don't follow them in the least. If Beach Head just likes the Maroon Beret, he wears the maroon beret. It's a funny thing about the Joes' uniforms. As you mentioned, the "Talking Battle Commander" Stalker got the beret color correct, so did Lt. Falcon. Nearly every other beret that the Joes wore was incorrect... and I don't want to argue about whether or not Stalker is SF qualified. Obviously, we're talking about children's toys, and so military regulations sort of go out the window. The berets, however, are a pet peeve of mine. They could have done a better job with them. Flint's lack of a Green Beret has always bothered me, as has Beach-Head's Maroon Beret. Stalker's beret is an enigma for the ages. I'm not saying the Joes should have all had regulation uniforms... that would have been repetitive and boring. But if they were going to the trouble of giving them berets and listing real military schools, they could have at least matched the schools and berets.

.[/QUOTE] I agree on Stalker....probably the whole LRRP team actually.....from the initial comics I was always under the impression that they were a team of Green Berets in Vietnam. |

Oliverbox & everyone else that contributed to this thread:
THANK YOU. I've never served in the military, but have the utmost respect for those that did/do. I appreciate you guys taking the time to educate your fellow Tankers that are curious and looking for answers to explain what have to be annoying questions. In Martial Arts, I'm always disturbed by how loosely the term "Black Belt" is thrown around and that frustration must be magnified 1000X over when it comes to the differences and mislabeling of terms such as "Ranger" and "Green Beret". Thanks again for the clarification and education. |
