Most countries have some kind of special operations force. In addition to the basic skills of recon and small-unit-behind-enemy-lines patrol tactics, most of these units specialize in a smaller number of niche areas. You just can't be the biggest bad ass in the world at everything. The unit that is excellent in hostage rescue might not be the same unit that can send 4 men off to live in an underground OP and conduct recon undedected for three weeks. What I'm sensing is that special operations forces are becoming increasingly acknowledged and appreciated in general. For instance, Norman Schwartzkopf was very leery of special forces prior to the Persian Gulf War, but his experience with them then did a lot to change his mind. Also, as we turn towards a more COIN-based military reality, the skills that used to be reserved for special forces are increasingly becoming learned by what previously might be called "line" infantry units. Whereas during WWII and the Cold War, in an era of draftees aond volunteers there might have been a distinction between grunts and specialists, today being a rifleman is a specialization in its own right, and a highly challenging one at that. |
