You know were all a buzz about items form cancelled waves that seemingly see SOME release these days but it got me thinking...did stuff like this not exist years ago?
I mean sure we've seen items that were in the design stage from the past like Battle Corps stuff or Replicators of which some pieces have shown up here and there but never on the scale we've recently seen things like the Alpha wave 3's and such. So my question is did this stuff simply never exist back then? Did Hasbro have a better idea of what would make it to market so much so that items that were deemed not worth it made it to the stages things today seem to be making it to? Or was it just more merch made it to shelves so much so that there never was cancelled waves? Just curious what everyone else thought. |

It's recently that people have learned they can throw a fit on the internet about canceled items, and technology leads to more leaks of items in development that don't make it. I'm sure there are TONS of canceled figures we don't know about.

Also, remember back in the day Hasbro released one wave per year.
They had alot more lead time on production so if something got cancelled it likely hadn't even been produced yet, so there would be no product TO leak. Now with a half-dozen or more waves a year, they have to go from the idea stage to production in short order in order to be ready to ship, so a cancellation leaves a lot of already produced product lying around. |

ONE figure comes to mind. The Firefly repaint that was advertised as part of the Tiger Force line up. Hasbro figured it was too recognizable as Firefly though and replaced him with another figure. He was eventually released in the TRU set YEARS later (with Dialtone, Jinx, etc) though.

I remember there was a huge internet uproar about the cancelled Operation Crimson Sabotage set in the Spy Troops line: YOJOE.COM | Operation Crimson Sabotage
Originally The CG's were Duke Snake-Eyes and someone else (I forget) I also want to say there was a raft or something but I could be wrong. EDIT: Found it! The 3rd person was Gung-Ho and there was a Raft: http://www.yojoe.com/archive/preprod/03/gungho2.shtml Last edited by Shogi; 12-19-2010 at 09:42 AM.. |

I figure that the Internet has a lot to do with it. If it weren't for the Internet, I wouldn't have a clue what's being released, what's not being released, what I missed or what my buddies frI'm high school were up to.

Well, first just to clarify something, Hasbro never released just one wave per year. For example, DEF, Eco Warriors, Ninja Force, Battle Corps, Star Brigade, etc. etc. didn't all just come out at once. Additionally, on the main ARAH line, the figures all came out in slow leaks throughout the year, this is why they had those gray silhouettes on the back of the card to inform you more characters were coming that year. They shipped in waves, but were all part of the same series.
Anyway, I think the bigger reason why there are more cancelled items leaks now then before is because of a couple of things, first, Hasbro produces a LOT more product now then they ever did before. If you look at 1993, it was by far the biggest year of the vintage line. If you look at 2009, it is more than double the size of 93. I think as a result a lot more stuff makes it to early development, and has product samples floating out there. On the vintage line the product plan for the year had to be much more methodically thought out, due to a variety of reasons, like producing the product catalogs for photography. Also, the production process in general was much slower back then with Hasbro having to do an internal drawing, mailing it a sculptor, who then had to mail it back, then paint masters, then 2 ups, and hand painted card art, etc. etc. Now being in the age of digital: email, digital sculpting, technology that can scan actors likenesses, etc. has expedited the process a lot (and brought the cost down) so in short, it's not such a huge deal to cancel an item now as it was back then. |

There are more canceled concepts out there than you think.
Some only went as far as art or maybe an in-house sculpt... and a whole lot of it is in private collections... but it's out there.
