Major marketing of the cartoon and figure line along with a simultaneous super awesome video game would really bring Joe fever back to life. But they have to do it right and do it big. Tons of advertising on Cartoon Network as well as Hub, and the major networks that still do Saturday morning cartoons. The game would have to be really great to generate a buzz. GI Joe needs to be pushed to the forefront of the minds of children in order for the line to be as huge as it used to be.

As a kid playing with Joes mostly in the later years of the 80s and early 90s, I can remember being very aware of the “good” years, from ’82 to about ’87, when all the Joes that I really wanted or cared about were released. Even back then I, as well as my friends, had a sense that things were getting…how shall I say…crappy, by ’88 and ’89.
I think in the earlier years, you had this dichotomy in the Joeverse that worked well—the Joes were the more real world army, camouflaged, elite but not particularly outlandish force, while Cobra was much more outlandish, unusual, fantastical, almost futuristic in certain ways. The Joes were relatable as real world, down to Earth soldiers with just enough variation to allow them to be individualized characters. Meanwhile Cobra fulfilled the fantasy, Sci Fi side of the coin. Cobra lifted the franchise above being just about ordinary soldiers and ordinary world conflict—while the Joes anchored the franchise in a more solid reality. Anyway, I don’t know if any of that makes sense. But I think that dichotomy, and that balance, is something rather unique to G.I. Joe, and helps it stand out from purely Sci Fi (e.i. Star Wars) or super hero franchises. |

I'm sorry, a game alone, regardless of quality, does not equate to an elevation of brand awareness. A cartoon and feature film will ALWAYS be more successful in that regard. I think MFJayman hit on a LOT of solid points, but I'd like to add another: the characters. Whether fans will admit it or not, GI Joe is character driven property, and I think in the last few years, Hasbro kind of lost sight of the fact it isn't just about making the same dozen characters over and over again. Most of us became attracted to this property by the characters, that is why 20 years later, many raised the fuss over race and gender changes to otherwise forgotten characters in the minds of retail and Hasbro. I think that has been a major hurdle for Hasbro is trying to make kids CARE about these characters again. And nothing I've seen until Renegades has managed to make me give a shit about GI Joe as characters. Sigma Six, Rise of Cobra, even the Direct to DVD films, everybody was largely interchangeable, Duke, Flint, Hawk, Captain Grid Iron, they were all kind of the same guy. Renegades is the first major step I've seen to try and develop the "character" of GI Joe, and not just show off the newest toys.

What could Hasbro do to make the Joes stand out? Well, the thing that made them great in my opinion in the first place was they looked like the cartoon figures. Now they're trying to make them look like real people that they're trying to make look like cartoon characters.

I don't know the answer to this as there are so many factors t play but I remember getting my NES in 1988, that was just about the end of GI Joe for me.
