Funny thing about articulation. As a kid I remember thinking... "damn my Joes got all loose and can't stand while my SW figures are still pretty sturdy.". And I didn't really have time to perfectly pose each figure while a full scale battle between good and evil was going on. That's what my imagination was for.

To be fair, some of them (SW) are coming out with ball joints and thigh swivels. I'd say that is one up one Joes (with the thigh swivel). But, now with Joes starting to use the wrist hinges, that helps even it back out, imo.

I feel like what GI Joe has going for it is what Hasbro seems to shy away. The fact that a child can grow up and become like Duke or Flint or Clutch or Shipwreck or any of the other countless Joe team members is something very different from what we see from other lines. I know for a fact that GI Joe inspired some of the members in today's military to join based off of their childhood love for the line. I can't think of other lines that fall in the same line. Kids will never grow up to be ninja turtles, power rangers, jedi, transformers or anything like that..... on the other hand GI Joe you just may be able to.
Another thing is there is a Joe pretty much from every walk of life. Something else GI Joe has going for it. However getting too sci-fi takes away from the very thing that it has going for it. You don't have to compete with the fantastic, show a kid something real they will love it just as much if not more..... they can relate. |

For me the articulation is great (can't wait for wave 3, articulation is even better!) and I really enjoy the detail of the POC line... but would could make this whole line better (imo) is more variety. It seems that the gi joe "team" is just Duke and Snake Eyes... and between the Storm Shadows and Destro's cobra doesn't offer much either. I love the new sculpt of Jungle Viper Low-Light and the promise of cobra shock troops, but seriously... we need more variety. Now POF has two desert battle snake eyes, just seems more like Barbie... too many outfits.

I don't think I even cared about articulation in the 80's.
They were cool characters and vehicles that I saw on TV everyday. |

Well look at it this way with regard to Star Wars...Darth Vader...we've all been duped with him. They made a Perfect Darth Vader in 2004 Vintage Line...and that Vader along with the E3 Vader has been circulating for the past 6 years with minimal tweeks. Vader is the only one I feel they have been able to get away with.
My point though is in 1996 we got Jedi Luke, he was great for 1996 but sucked in 2004, then they gave us Jedi Luke with the Rancor and then again with the Skiff...better and awesome for 2004 but sucks hard compared to the 2008 Jedi Luke...awesomeness incarnate...but still not perfect. NOW 2010, we have the best Luke to date...he's perfect in my book, short yes...but he's supposed to be. He's accurate and totally playable and pretty damn near perfect...finally a Jedi Luke I can be happy with and sell off all the others. They release each figure with the possibility for improvement each time. Take Commander Cody for instance. His first release in 2006 was not fully articulated...but you bought another one in 2008 and then again in 2010, because they keep improving the articulation in order to justify selling yet another figure you already have. It's time for Vader to get a Force Unleashed upgrade, super super duper articulation so that he can be posed in those kick ass moves from the game. The days of Vader being more or less a lightsaber wielding statue are over. I'd gladly pay vintage figure prices for the same and consistent superior articulation of the Vintage Lukes (or the Clone Wars Madalorians for that matter). |
