Congrats man, CO is an awesome place to live.....hope ya like playin' in the snow! As far as your display room goes just have fun with it. The only mistake I made with my studio is I built too many "permanent" bookcases, tables, etc... it would be nice to rearrange once in awhile.

The important thing is to make sure the display is clean and uncluttered. Nothing ruins a nice collection quicker than crappy shelves with a ton of crap shoved on them.
Invest in some open, clean, white shelving or some nice glass display cases from IKEA - both can be had relatively cheaply. Don't get plastic stackable crap, it looks tacky and cluttered. Hang stuff from the ceiling, but be careful not to overdo it. Again, too much, and it just looks tacky. The most important thing is this: this is your Joe room, not a closet. Keep it clean! This is your chance to show non-Joe fans how cool Joes can look, and that we're not just OCD hoarders.

Feel your pain about your collection being in boxes. We moved six years ago, and I'm still waiting to get the basement finished! That's where the Joes will go. I've got stuff from 1964-now, and my basement looks like a Hasbro warehouse!
And now, I hope it's OK, but my wife (the coolest in the world) would like to add... Hi guys! Here's my suggestions for an excellent Joe Room! Hang flying stuff from the ceiling (like mentioned in a previous post) Also - paint ceiling a pretty sky blue and add clouds with a sponge dipped in white paint. I know it sounds girly, but will really look cool if you keep the clouds small and to a minimum. When you look up, it will look like there are really planes flying overhead! If you have all branches of service to represent, paint each wall a different color to coordinate each branch of service and separate by Army, Navy, AirForce, Marines (you know the drill, maggot!). Sorry, my inner R. Lee Ermey got ahold of me there. If possible, place in the center of the room some type of glass case to keep the valuable stuff away from sticky fingers (we have kids) or from over-zealous Joe enthusiasts. Preferably with a lock. You just can't trust adult boys from keeping away from the toys! I've been with my crazy hubby many years and this is our third house, I've designed two very cool "Joe Room's" for him and due to the nasty economy, we're behind in working on our third. The first room was tiny and was designed as multi-purpose with a 'John Wayne barfed olive drab and desert tan' motif. The second room was cooler even though it was in the basement, but we made it look like the belly of a ship, including a "bilge pump" - i.e. water meter. We painted the area with lots of 'ship gray' and used a simple stencil to camoflauge the usual basement stuff, like marking an area above the water meter "bilge pump". Also, we stenciled, "Engine Room" over one door way, and "Command Center" over another door way and over the water heater we stenciled "Boiler Room". Sounds crazy, but we got lots of laughs from friends, family and fellow Joe collectors. Good luck on your Joe Room. Even though I'm a chick and more into Twilight and less into GI Joe, I've enjoyed helping create my husband's favorite of all rooms. And, yes, I am the coolest GI Joe Collector Wife. They should make an action figure out of me! Back to Jon: Here's some pics of what I've done in my last two Joe rooms!!! Last edited by gijon; 07-28-2013 at 11:41 AM.. |

If possible, put any and all of your MIB stuff on the same wall as the window or at least in an area that gets the least amount of sun light. Be mindful of vents because you don't want a figure or vehicle getting bombarded with heat all winter. Don't put any shelves too high to dust on a regular basis.
I think MOCs hanging on a wall with tacks looks awful. Use a 1"x4" shelf with 1/4" groove cut in it about 3/4" from the edge. That way the figures can sit there slightly leaning on the wall. You can also place an acid free backing board if you are worried about the cards warping. I would recommend (money permitting) that you use curio cabinets instead of open shelves to reduce on dust.

if you decide to put your figures in glass cases, you may want to add a couple of small computer fans to the top so that it keeps them dust free.

Do you do dio's or anything in the likes? I have a 6 ft x 10 Ft back porch (2nd floor) that I have my shelves in, plus an old table in the back quarter to work my dios.
All my stuff is on industrial grade 5 shelf units, that I keep cut in half (2-3 shelves each unit)Got them through Target.com at 75 pop. Me personally with what I have, half my space is set for display, the other half if set for making and creating my dios

good news! you'll have a lot of fun setting it up finally.
if you have a membership to cosco, check out their shelving system the sell. they are perfect for collection set-ups. they range from $70 - $90, but they are well worth it. the casters alone are worth at least $40. they go together real quick and are fastner free. i line each one with plywood, as they are "wire" racks. i have four of them for my collection. they sell another shelving that is stationary with pre-cut shelves with it for a little more that i use for tool shelving for my studio. here's a pic of two of the rack type. they wheels really aid in cleaning as i can move them out to clean and dust behind them. here's a pic of two of them.
