From the Hippocratic Oath - I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.

I agree with Zuludelta that being a pacifist doesn't make one any less courageous. But I also agree that it makes little sense for a pacifist to volunteer for the military, and then join an elite combat unit. I can kind of see it with Doc, but not Lifeline.

I don't think that is refering to not using a wepon in a combat situation to defend yourself or others. It refers to not willingly prescribe somthing that would harm a paitient or kill them. IE: Jack Kavorkian

I think his position on the Joe team would refer to his skills as a doctor as well as his courage under fire and stress. Even if Lifeline never held a gun (except on the package) it would take some serious plums to run out under fire and treat someone with stray bullets everywhere.
Also, despite what the package shows, his outfit makes a great deal more sense if he were following the Geneva Convention (something Hama has usually shown them to do) with the word "RESCUE" in big letters, because it tells the other guy in no uncertain terms that he's not a direct threat. Our combat medics can defend themselves, but they don't get the same protection, but since the Taliban doesn't really give a crap, it's a justifiable risk. Now, as to whether Cobra follows the Geneva Convention, the answer might be surprising. Since Cobra has a "literal" army of lawyers and can bail out or otherwise "arrange the release" of most captured mooks. If Cobra troops were to (openly) commit war crimes, then it might make things a good deal harder for EE and the CGs to clog up the channels and impede the Joes diplomatically. Even when the SAW Viper mowed down those unarmed Joes, it was due to a miss-communication. CC would have no moral issue whatsoever with executing prisoners, but he knows if anyone found out it would give the good guys justification to toss out the rule-book too (and we've seen what happens when Americans chuck the rules, everyone turns into Jack Bauer without the magical ability to get good intel from torture), so CC has a very pragmatic reason to at least pretend like he's playing by the rules, so Cobra troops would likely avoid shooting Doc and Lifeline's faces off in open combat, unless the trooper or agent in question were just that vicious or undisciplined. |

He's a pacifist. Story-wise, he creates a brilliant counter-point to many of the Joes as they consider him a waste of a slot. It is his courage and skills that make him a strength to the team - as well as an idealogical voice that serves to give some balance to decision making in the field. The problem realistically is that Lifeline is not an MD but a field medic. I know the military recruits doctors without any concern about them other than if they can do the job - I don't know that they are even required to pass basic training, but a trained paramedic that is non-com, I don't know that would be true, but it is possible. With GI Joe, there seems to be a precedent for bringing in civilians with no formal military training (FBI, SWAT, etc) due to their skills and courage and training them "in house." Lifeline's file card doesn't indicate that, but it doesn't preclude that either. I'd like to think in today's environment, the armed forces would take anyone who would serve under fire without compulsion and their only desire to save others lives.
