I think it was an after thought because his file card say nothing about it.

As a major Lifeline fan, let me first say I love Lifeline_MD's theory! In my 'verse, he is not a pacifist and carries a .45 with either an M-4, or a P90 PDW (courtesy of Marauder John). The whole pacifist thing really goes back to WW II, when many pacifists who wanted to serve their country became medics. In the modern world, however, the terrorists don't care if someone's a medic or not, and medics like Lifeline need to practice a little "preventative medicine". And no, the Joes don't have a Navy corpsman officially, although most of the medics after Doc and Lifeline don't say on the file cards what branch they're from.

Honestly, in my "joe-verse" as a kid, Doc was a pacifist but Lifeline was more of a "combat medic" in that he did what he had to do in order to take care of his unit.
I see no problem with pacifists in a military unit such as this as long as they are the best darned field-doctors there are. In fact, I think it is a great story-starter. I remember many-a-time in my youth when Doc would be standing alone and have to make a defensive choice in order to save the unit. I recall a long story I played out in which Doc used a flare gun and took out a FANG copter, killing the pilot - an act he felt guilty about for some time. (Alright, maybe I played out some strange scenarios with my Joes....) As a kid, Lifeline was always a shooter as well as a cutter for me ( even though I tended to stick with Hama's comic interpretations of the characters) because he came with that pistol. Otherwise, I might have put him as a pacifist alongside Doc. (And honestly, I don't see how being a pacifist would make any of these characters a "pansy" or a "queer." In fact, a pacifist who is brave enough to go into combat situations to help their country seems pretty darned brave to me. I know it is a different discussion, but I'm just saying it shouldn't take away from the toy character in my opinion.) |

Desmond Doss, an Army medic who was drafted during World War II, went beyond being a pacifist, he was actually a registered conscientious objector owing to his being a devout Seventh Day Adventist. But he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war. Here's the citation:
Doss's example shows that a soldier (and a medic, in particular) can still be morally and/or religiously opposed to the idea of killing another human being, but that belief doesn't necessarily prevent him from fulfilling his military duties to his comrades and to his country to the utmost. Other pacifists who have been awarded the Medal of Honor: USMC Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler (a.k.a. "The Fighting Quaker") and US Army Sgt. Alvin C. York. I think the real issue with Doc and Lifeline is why would pacifists volunteer for the military in the first place. Desmond Doss and Alvin York were both drafted so they had no choice in the matter. Smedley Butler didn't develop a pacifist outlook in life until he was a few years into his military career. So unless Doc and Lifeline became pacifists in the course of their military careers, I think the actual issue is why they signed up for the Army in the first place, not whether or not a pacifist medic can be good enough of a soldier to qualify for an elite unit. Oh, and medics and corpsmen do receive combat training (they go through the same weapons and hand-to-hand combat training everybody else goes through in Basic/Boot camp). |

For all the crap he takes, even cartoon Lifeline was pretty badass. When Cobra had him and his girl pinned down at a cabin, rather than use the hunting rifle to defend the position, dumped (generator?) fuel and set the mountain on fire to hold of the snakes without actually killing anyone (although a few Vipers likely needed a change of trousers after seeing that).

In my Joeverse Doc and Lifeline are both pacifists, and are regulated to base duties as the top hospital staff: Doc being the unit's main physician and Lifeline (with the rank of Sergeant First Class) as the head medic.
Med Alert, Stretcher, Tourniquet (a custom), Sideswipe, Stalker and Falcon handle medical duties in the field. |

neither are pacifists in my universe.
Doc is usually stationed at the 83 HQ while Lifeline and Stretcher usually hitch a lift on the Tomahawk into firefights.they go to collect injured folks not to participate but will defend themselves and their patients |

Doc is no pacifist. Remember when he made that weapon of mass destruction that turned ordinary lightning into a superlaser that was used to assault Cobra's Sovereignty?
A lot of innocent people died at the Cobra temple that day...
