Not even close.
Unless you allow your collection to grow so huge that it's all boxed up and the boxes take over your house. Even that guy whose house was covered in displayed toys isn't really a hoarder. His stuff is displayed. Hoarders is a scary show. That people get that bad is unbelievable.

I watch it and love it! But I feel like I am OK. Those guys have stuff EVERYWHERE! They can't even walk in their own homes! Plus they often have tons of trash and pet feces everywhere. It is disgusting. My home is kept very clean and clutter free. Even though I have a TON of G.I.Joe stuff, my collection is nicely packed and stacked and takes up one wall in my garage and space under my bed and some of my favorite pieces are displayed on some shelves. I also try and sell some of my stuff off on a regular basis to make more room for the things I really like and want to display someday in my G.I.Joe room. In addition, my wife would NOT let me or our house get to that point even though she supports and encourages my collecting. So, I think I'm good...for now, lol!

Ha! I was just thinking of this the other day!
I think as long as you don't have to clear a path through your house to get to the front door, you're ok

I actually get a little bit offended when the people on the show refer to themselves as "collectors." I consider myself a collector (as I'm sure most, if not all, of us on the Tank do), and I have a lot of stuff. But it's all either displayed neatly or stored neatly. I don't like the idea of "hoarding" becoming synonymous with "collecting."
The people on "Hoarders" have a serious illness. It goes beyond just having a lot of junk. They have a compulsion that makes them accumulate things and they lack the ability to part with anything. That's a sickness. To me, collecting implies a certain passion. Or at the very least, an interest. I collect action figures because I genuinely like action figures. I enjoy hunting for them, I enjoy displaying them, I'm interested in the history of action figures and how they've developed and changed over the years. Most of the nuts on "Hoarders" fill their homes with anything and everything, not just things they truly enjoy. Some of those kooks will keep a broken pencil from five years ago because they still intend to give it to someone. And just FYI, if you like "Hoarders" you might also enjoy "American Pickers." It's a show on the History Channel that follows two guys as they buy peoples' old junk. They encounter many hoarders who are unwilling get rid of anything, even when they're offered money for it. |
