But interestingly enough, Lady Gaga is a big Bruce fan herself. And he seems to have given her his stamp of approval as well: (contains language not suitable for work or kids). And for one of Bruce's most unusal recent performances: I'd be interested in hearing about any Bruce references in the Tranformers universe as well! Interesting point made about that Issue 1 Bruce reference being made as early as in '82. Bruce was actually pretty big by '80/'81 on the East Coast (multipe night stand sellouts at East Coast arenas), but I don't know how well known he would have been to kids. So I guess my question is was the comic initially aimed as adults as well as kids, or is this just Hama throwing in a obscure adult music reference for his own amusement? |

i am legitimately the only jersey resident that don't like bruce. i dig the stone pony, asbury is cool, hell the asbury park press is groovy, but not bruce.. ok ok, i don't dislike bruce, i just don't like the music.. and it's odd cus jersey loves bruce like ,, well,, south jersey loves philly..
Your not alone in that. I've never seen the appeal myself, I mean the music is pretty good but Bruce himself is possibly the worst voice I have ever heard, he's just screaming in a scratchy throat voice. |

I'm not a voiceophile myself, I even think Bob Dylan sounds great.
I can get that Bruce uses a voice in lots of his best known songs that isn't going to be for everyone. Having seen him live in Jersey I can also see why a few NJ natives might be a little turned off by the homestate crowd. Most of his fans go to him for his songwriting and as a live performer. It's been fun as a fan to see him become cool again recently with more young bands and young fans. But I digress. |

I think Bruce's music echoed the kind of pent-up economic frustration being felt by so many blue collar workers during that time period. The COBRA arch-type is a perfect analogue for what could go wrong with this type of anger. I think Hama used COBRA as an artistic warning against demagogues who feed on this type of malaise.
I'm not reading the current comics, but I know comic publishers are taking pains to distance themselves from the current political happenings. This is unfortunate, because COBRA provides a perfect warning against the polarizing anger of the current political climate. Tea Party, Green Party, Liberal Socialist, Conservative Facist, where is the civility in the current polticial discourse? At some point, Americans will yearn for unity. COBRA is Democrat. COBRA is Republican. COBRA is Independent. COBRA unites everyone. |

Jatta, that's a really good observation about the way Cobra used to be presented.
The new comics seem to be avoiding partisan politics, which may well make sense, but they are most definitely taking place in a post 9/11 world. I always liked the original Marvel comic for its sly and clever sociopolitical comentary and humor - for example its depiction of the Eastern bloc through say Borovia and the Oktober Guard. |

I'm a rock music guy, and don't know Lady Gaga's music well at all.

Her music is catchy because she takes former hits and "remakes" them with new lyrics. However, you can't copyright a chord progression, so that is legal. See Queen v. Vanilla. Alejandro is pretty borderline though, as she actually lifts not only the progression, but almost note for the note the melodic "hook". However, it's apparently different enough. Rock and Pop music, ain't rocket science. It's image, marketing, and luck. Enough of any of them, and you'll get heard.
