DARPA is always working on new and emerging technologies.
The key here is "technologies". Vehicles are simply carriers of technology. What probably has DARPA's interest (and I admit, I'm guessing here) is not so much a flying car, but the technologies needed to build such a vehicle. The counter-rotating rotors (different materials and rotor design), increases in engine power without increasing engine size; that may be what DARPA is actually looking at. But again, that's just a guess. |

This is the dumbest idea ever. Why does a Humvee need to fly? thats what Blackhawks are for. Popular Mechanics is always doing articles about things that never come to see the light of day.

The counter-rotating rotors (different materials and rotor design), increases in engine power without increasing engine size; that may be what DARPA is actually looking at. But again, that's just a guess. Counter rotating rotors and blade technology has already advanced passed this.. They are probably looking at: -How to build a multi function (drive / fly) control configuration for the driver/pilot. They are probably looking to do something more advanced than have a steering wheel mounted on the dash, and then have a cyclic and collective that doesnt get used unless it is in helo mode.. No they are probably building on the joystick controls of other cancelled prototypes. Same goes for the pedals.. I doubt we would see 4 pedals (2 anti-torque pedals, accelerator, and brake). -Streamlined hub and transmission components.. Somehow they need to keep it from becoming so top heavy. - Hovering.. from the pictures, there is little reason to believe that this thing will hover well at all... it's not balanced, so they are probably looking into some advanced yaw controls as well. They are taking the most impractical components and working to make them work together.. That's what they do. If they can make a Hummer fly smoothly.... they will definetly learn a thing or two about making an aircraft fly with less vibration. |

This is dumb. they tried the concept of a flying jeep back in the 50s and 60s looks up the piaseki flying jeep or something like that. The hmmwv was great for what is was designed for but all the upgrades and after market parts blow IMHO how about they just make a great land vehicle and use helos more often like pop rocks and soda you just shouldnt mix the two

It would make for a good compact personnel extraction vehicle.
