If I have learned anything by working in character creation and the video game industry, it is that there is no such thing as lame characters but poorly written characters.

Sgt. Slaughter. Not lame, but very forced, at least in the cartoon. His filecard made him sound like a badass, he was ok in the comics, but in the cartoon, he became a superhero, the biggest, strongest, baddest, etc... and I felt that just made him lame.

As a kid, that is what made Sgt. Slaughter cool to me. He was kind of a superhero.

Hama-verse: The "...as your replacements" characters that were brought in as a group when the run was in the early 30s is the most obvious "Hey there's a bunch of new toys we have to sell" character introduction that I remember. It had to happen, it would be a boring line if it stayed the same core characters forever...but it still felt forced.

Even as a kid, I always saw Sgt. Slaughter as a cool cross-over type figure, but realized that he was a bit overplayed in the cartoons -- especially G.I. Joe the Movie. Now, Sgt. Slaughter is the ONLY real-life cross-over character I have ever liked. After Slaughter, all the other cross-over characters felt really lame and forced to me, like the Fridge or even the proposed Rocky Balboa. Later in life, no matter how much I liked Roddy Piper as a wrestler (what little I cared about professional wrestling), he still felt like a forced, gratuitous character. Jason |

I don't think Duke was forced at all. As far as chain of command goes, Hawk was the officer in charge of the entire team, and then they created Duke to be more of a Top Sgt, boots-on-the-ground character. Plus, I don't think Hasbro considered Hawk a very popular character - toy wise - seeing as how they were phasing out the MMS.
So, Duke was a character that Hasbro could introduce as a mail-away figure in 83 and carded figure in 84. Jason It was a little confusing for some people when Hawk showed up, I remember. I had a small selection of GI Joe comics, including a digest version of No. 1-3 collected, so I knew. But you could tell he was kind of shoe-horned in there, and we've had to deal with that weird dynamic ever since (e.g. Duke being a major in ROC). Sgt Slaughter was definitely "forced" but I always liked him. Not sure why, the whole idea is pretty lame! But I liked wrestling well enough (I don't remember him being all that popular until he became a bad guy for a while, though), and he looked the part - unlike a lot of Joes! - so he always worked for me. Having a drill sergeant/trainer made a lot of sense to me, too. Yeah, I think a lot of "retro" reissues during that time were forced into becoming new characters because of trademark issues.

i think roddy piper was more out of place than he was forced. he was an exclusive con figure or something that you had to jump through hoops that a casual collector wasnt going to do.
i dont think he ever had a run against slaughter and "oh maybe we should put someone famous with iron grenaiders." honestly, dude was more like a slaughter's renegade than an iron grenadier. he'd been a heel and a face; and he played good guys when he was acting. so. just weird as hell. |
