So I hope this doesn't seem like a dumb question but I kinda would like to know how many of you have had actual military training and how many of you were in a squad or platoon? I only ask this because so-far I only have 6 alley vipers and 5 Jungle Vipers, now I kinda wanna stick to my group of 6 with possibly a leader, but I don't know how close to reality I am by only having that many per group.

Platoon sizes vary on the mission but are usually around 20 or so people with squads breaking up into units of about 3-5 per squad.

5-6 is a few short of a squad, but would probably work for a larger fireteam, to my mind.

10-16 for a squad divided by 2 for a team
4 squads make a platoon 4 platoons make a company after that...well it's up to brigade/regiment/etc commanders to decide how many of what make what there are many MANY exceptions to this...basically a commander can designate just about anything he wants |

Battalion - 300+ Company - 50-100 Platoon - 20-50 Squad - 5-10 Fire Team - 5 or under Depends on the mission and type of group. As standard Marine fire team consists of team leader, one rifleman, one grenadier and one light heavy machine gunner. A squad consists of about 3 fire teams. A Marine platoon usually consists of three or four of these and also consists of Corpsman and support staff (as mission allows) that make up part of the smaller teams as needed. In terms of G.I. Joe... I'd consider the whole Joe unit as a Company all it's own with Platoons divided up according to mission (vehicle, armor, naval, etc.). Squads and fire teams are then divided from that depending on what you have them doing.

As SJ pointed out squads and platoon sizes vary. Infantry squads and platoons can be quite large. I never served in a squad larger then 8, which means I never served in a platoon larger then 26. (four squads of 8, plus platoon sgt. and ldr.) The average squad I served in was 6-7 soldiers. 3-4 per team.
For instance, on my last post my squad consisted of 7 soldiers. Our Squad leader (E5), a specialist (E4), myself (E3), a PV2 (E2), and three PVTs (E1). We split into two teams. Our Sgt led the main team that stayed with company command assisted by our specialist, PV2 and a private. I led our forward standalone position assisted by our two other privates.

Also taking into consideration that the Joes are not standard issue grunt teams. They run in more of a SpecOps fashion. Meaning, that you can have a Squad of 5 guys (one officer, two specialists, one NCO, and a "grunt") to handle the job. This works fine for the mission as in a SpecOps world, you don't want alot of attention that a whole platoon of riflemen will attract.

Unit size also different on Branch, for example a standard Army Infantry Squad is 9 but I believe that is 10 in the Marines. Also it may different based on the unit’s organization. A typical Light Platoon consists of 3 x 9 man Squads and 1 7 man weapons Squad, a Mechanized Infantry Platoon has 3 x 9 man Squads and 2 x 5 man Sections (vehicle crew’s). I’m not sure about a Striker Platoon. But in the end a unit is task organized to meet the unit’s mission.
