Hey gang, I sat down last night to read some Joe comics and watch resolute again. After doing both, I realized that very shortly we will have seen over 5 different storylines for GI Joe in a period of less than two years. Here they are in no particular order:
1) Rise of Cobra 2) Idw re-boot (G.I.Joe, Origins, Cobra) 3) Idw ARAH continuation 4) Resolute 5) Renegades I know that common sense would say that it's good to have this many different versions, because practically everyone can find something that they like, but for me it's really hard to keep up with it all. Maybe it's just that I'm a product of the 80's but it seemed like Joe was better when there was just the marvel comics (ARAH/Special Missions) and the cartoon. The characters/storytelling just seemed better. Anyway, what do you guys think? |

You're beating a dead horse here, homey. The Renegades thread is full of "discussion" about this. If you aren't interest in the new story, don't get involved. Read/watch what you're interested in and ignore the rest.
It honestly reminds me of all of the movie remakes. Just because someone remade the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original film isn't diminished because of it. And I can always watch the original. It still exists, it's there to enjoy, regardless of whatever comes after. Joe is the same way.

Since no fan can agree on anything... isn't good that we are able to pick and choose what we want to follow? If you don't like Resolute, then read the IDW Reboot. If you want a classic story, pick up Hama's continuation of the original comic.
No one is saying you have to watch and love them all. It's a great time to be a Joe fan and I'm thankful I have any choices because for a long time we didn't.

Joe could have 10 different story lines and I'd try to follow them all (not saying I'll like them all) but I'd give them all a chance! I guess the way I see it (like you mentioned) that someone is bound to find they're niche with it and if that means that GI Joe will continue on in some form or another...well than how is that a bad thing?

I remember when I was a kid and Special missions came out, that I wondered why they felt the need to do another Joe comic. I remember reading a few issues, but honestly couldn't see the point. Maybe I was too young, but it just seemed very un-necessary at the time.
In retrospect, it also bothered me that the cartoon and the comic were in two separate Joe universes. We didn't have cable when I was a kid and when I did see the cartoon, it was at my cousin's about once a month. I remember not being impressed with the cartoon much and being very disappointed that nothing from the comic turned up in the show. |

Well, Rise of Cobra and Resolute are already essentially defunct.
IDW and their ARAH continuation cater to very small niche markets. So long as those markets are enjoying them and the books are profitable, there's no harm in continuing them. They're irrelevant to the mainstream perception of G.I. Joe. Clearly, we as fans have no problem keeping them sorted out. Renegades is going to dominate the Joe brand until the movie sequel comes out, and even then I'm theorizing that Hasbro won't make the movie the central focus of Joe, and will instead do a much more limited movie-based release this time based on the lackluster sell-through of RoC product. Think along the lines of an "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" release than a RoC or Transformers 2 level release. Or the current ratio of "realistic/Vintage" Star Wars figures vs. Clone Wars themed product. Or to put it another way, I really do think we will finally see two Joe lines at the same time when the movie sequel hits: Renegades is supposed to continue for five seasons, and will probably be the true "centerpiece" of Joe for that time, as far as Hasbro's concerned. |

I often wonder how the Joe collectors from the 12' and even 8' line feel about the myriad changes. ARAH certainly wouldn't have been Joe to them.
As Kneroh said, I'm glad we have so many mythos to choose from. I'd just to like to see ME versions of ALL of them, especially Sgt Savage, Extreme and the characters introduced in Sigma 6 |
