They just need two. One that stays grounded in ARAH lore and the other to be the new Bakugan or whatever the hell Hasbro is gunning for.

Even though it's not a comic, you could throw in the Pursuit of Cobra storyline in there, too (or is it a continuation of ROC, just without a movie?). And what about the original cartoon? GI Joe Extreme? Sgt. Savage? Sigma Six? There's tons of various Joe incarnations and storylines through the years.
I'm a fan of some of the storylines: first and foremost, the Marvel comic and IDK's continuation of it, Resolute (wish they did a little more with it...maybe not an ongoing, weekly show, but another 90 min. or so movie would be cool), and even the ROC storyline/continuity is somewhat ok in my book. I'm not much of a fan of the IDK reboot, and Renegades has yet to be determined. I guess it's good to have options. |

In my mind, these different storylines exist in different universes when one storyline conflicts/contradicts with other storylines, or when the story and characterizations are different enough that they could not possibly be happening within the same universe. |

My thoughts are close to this, but I will say just make a comic continuity (ARAH or IDW reboot) and a cartoon continuity. If ROC2 is a much improved movie, then add a third. Then I have my own Joeverse and I pick and choose or make up whatever continuity I want.

As for the new stuff, I love ARAH continuation and G.I.Joe:Cobra...resolute was awesome too and I wish that it would continue. The rest of it, I can take it or leave it. |

I don't see the filecards being a seperate continuity in the 80's - at least not seperate from the comic. Hama consistently worked personality and specialty information from the file cards into the characters in the comics. Didn't Hama write the majority of the file cards as well?

No. I'm with you on that. But Hasbro already denounced it. So it's already considered non-canon. Which is too bad. Because of all the incarnations of Joe that came out, I thought that this mostly resembled the same G.I. Joe that had been going on for decades.
I feel where you're coming from NC and I think some people are missing your point. (Or maybe it's me that's missing your point.) In the 80s, Hasbro adopted the Marvel Comics as its definitive Joe canon. The Sunbow cartoons, although tamed down, were produced by Hasbro so they somewhat translated. All of this translated to the toy line where Hama would write the character cards. With these different versions of G.I. Joe coming out and Hasbro, out of fear of backlash, not keeping to one story as being canon; it makes it tough to figure out which is the definitive timeline. And the answer to your question is that there is none. Unlike other fan based lines (Star Trek, Star Wars, X-Men, etc.). G.I. Joe has not established this since the 80s. This is mostly because Hasbro has been searching to give G.I. Joe a marketable identity for years. There's multiple threads on why this is. Some say it's because G.I. Joe is military and this kind of thing doesn't relate well in today's geo-political climate. Others will say that it's because Hasbro is trying to market to a new generation of kids. No matter what the reason, this lack of structure of identity has created a group of core fans that are essentially divided on what they consider true canon. Now when creating a new product, whether its via media or toys, Hasbro has to contend with these very diversified bunch of fans all while trying to appeal to a new market to keep the brand alive. Resolute and RoC are prime examples of Hasbro trying to appease the opposite ends of the masses (and possibly even gauging them). Resolute was a one shot deal, meant for the fans. It wasn't meant to be a continuation. RoC wasn't meant for the fans, it was meant to see how it would draw new fans in.

I agree with what some folks have said, but wanted to throw in my two cents...
The original comic and cartoon is what most of us grew up with. I felt 'Special Missions' was more serious, and was a lot more gritty, but I prefer JOE as more 'fantasy' oriented military action. I think 'Resolute' was a nice blend of realism and fantasy. I don't read the comics anymore, tho the art is awesome, some of the stories are a little too 'real world' for me, at least some of the newer ones are. 'Rise of Cobra' was about the best 'JOE' movie we could get. There was NO WAY it could have been better, as it was about making money and NOT fan service. (Yes, I liked it OK) I'm interested in 'RENEGADES', and to see what it's like before I pass judgment on it. Like 'ROC', not too thrilled with some of the changes, but realize it is a 'new' universe of JOE action, which I hope means NEW TOYS! Regardless of which 'JOE-verse' you like, there's something for us all to love...and hate!! YO JOE!!! |
