Breakin' The Lore: Changing the GI Joe Mythos
This video discuss my ideas for making the conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra more current. It does discuss terrorism so I have given it a trigger warning. This is my current Joeverse/Head Canon which has changed because of the Classified line. Do you have a Joeverse and has it changed to become more current? If you don't want to watch the video (I'd really appreciate it if you did) I have changed Cobra from being a terrorist organisation and they are now a multinational megacorporation focusing on consumerism and lifestyle. G.I. Joe is now a militarised police force and the team members are a bit older and in the later stages of their career. |

Nice take, especially with Cobra Commander. Mine will probably always stay in the 1980s style. Even though, I can really see the evil corporate angle while seeing Amazon boxes in my living room and my wife and daughter on their I- phones.

I am so glad to see this thread. I was going to make one to direct people to your YouTube channel. I really like it and todays video is probably the best. Yes, I have changed the script when it comes to my Joeverse too.
I still have Cobra as a terrorist organisation but more like ISIS or AQ with Cobra Commander as the leader. They are more clandestine too. In my head I have them propping up a puppet government like North Korea whilst they operate in the background. They strike targets across the world trying to destabilise governments so that they can fill the vacuum with their ideology. The Joes are much like yours operating under the UN but for me more of a British angle as that is more me. My Aircraft Carrier custom (still in rebuild) is HMS FLAGG from the Royal Navy. The ground base (when I win the lotto) is in the Scottish Highlands and although overt on the surface has a full base below. There is always room to develop too. Operation longbow is definitely going to join. Classified etc the 6 inch line is for the shelf and display. My Joeverse is all 0-ring and 1/18 scale they are ready for combat. GI Joe is an individual. Every mission he assembles a different team of specialists. Cobra would be around, but not as all-encompassing.

My Joeverse follows the Hama comics, mostly. I have Cobra as an antagonist country, based on Cobra Island, rather than an ISHIT-style terrorist organization. Cobra Commander (or Serpentor) behave more like Doctor Doom. One thing that always made me roll my eyes was the idea that Cobra could build a skyscraper in the middle of New York City and the US government was perfectly ok with that. Like... how does the government allow a terror organization to build a headquarters in their largest city? lol

My head canon has always been different from what has been widely released. I still pull from some of those stories, but I try to bring things into the here and now.
I did have a time when I mixed the Joe and Marvel Universe together. I only touched on it briefly in my own little world and then tucked it away on a hard drive somewhere. |

I mix Marvel and GI JOE too. I have the new Joe's as a special forces team of SHIELD who help SUPERS deal with villan stuff, and Cobra is like HYDRA basically.

Nope, not at all.
I still think of all of the characters as a mix of how they were in the comics and the file cards, same as I always have. They just have new outfits and the toys are bigger. |

I'll always see Classified as a "fun take" on existing figures, kind of like how I see Black Series Star Wars, or Revelation MOTU figures, things like that. The original figures will always be "the real deal" to me. My head canon will always be in-line with Hama's file cards being #1 and the Marvel comic just behind it.
The cartoons were fun, but even as a kid I didn't really take it seriously. I hated that they all carried the same rifle, things like that. Snake Eyes getting Timber in the cartoon is the only thing I can think of that was really cool as a kid. For Marvel and DC, I'm mixed. There were the 90's X-Men and Batman lines, 80's Secret Wars and Super Powers stuff, and all the millions of 6 inch Marvel and DC lines from the last 15 years, so I don't really have a "this is the real thing" line. Although the 3.75 inch Marvel Universe figures are my favorite, mostly just for the beautiful card art. |
