THis is 100% tru, but i thought that it woudl skew it both ways, so i settled on an average...
you can argue it both ways a terroist group would typically not have the ability to get machineray at the rate, or they can stockpile, i setteld on an average... look, i'm not saying that i am right, the general concensous is that 'cobra is a large as you want it to be', however, clearly you don't need 1 vehicle PER person. so there is a limit (based off the number of soldiers you belive that the force has). Personally, i envisioned cobra having unlimited HISS tanks for example as a kid, then again i envisioned that there where tens on thousands or abrams... to ... and there certainly are not. but the numbers that i have researched as far as averages tell a different story the other thing that we have to remember is that as the years go by, tank production is less tanks, better tanks... so i am also looking at this in today's situation rather than the early 1980's... certainly, if Joes where WWII verterans, then the numbers woudl look totally different... i am open to any suggestions, as i love this topic and most of you are tired of it, but please be specific with statistical evidance... i would love to hear your comments... sorry for all the spelling errors [ QUOTE=Angry.Android;1936180]this is all based on the assumption that cobra is structured like an actual army though. If they are structured more like a terrorist group, those number would skew. I always assumed they shipped/stockpiled their equipment through shell companies, and those would employ regular folks who aren't in cobra proper to ship the stuff, warehouse it, etc. Folks just working for a company, that happens to be a wholly owned subsidary of Extensive Enterprises.[/QUOTE] |

So where did you do this research? How did you arrive at 20,000-30,000 and does that include support staff or jsut fighting men?

When I was a part of Cobra, there were only 10,000 of us, but I got out early because I thought Amway was the way to go.
Seriously, though, this is an interesting thread. Will the OP be collecting and displaying this many figures? ;-)

I think continuity would also play a huge part in this hypothetical line of reasoning. The 80s toon had oodles of super expensive rare tech, loads of troopers and such. The comic books seemed more reasonable, but then they had their "oodles of troops" issues too. I always thought it was cool in the comics how they just had one Starviper though. with the experimental "upgrades".
The movie verse had limited troops though, i mean, only 18 neovipers, it was a much smaller organization. |

As far as ground combat forces go, I'd ballpark 25% blueshirts, 20% regular vipers, 30% specialised Vipers (Frag, SAW, Tele, Techno, Night), 10% vehicle operators, and 15% environment specialists and true special forces (Snow Serpents, Desert Scorpions, Siegies, Alley Vipers, Range Vipers).
No one gets too excited about the huge logical and support train any army needs, so unless someone wants to invent their own Laundry Vipers, Hangar Sweeper Vipers, etc, why not assume that there are a just lot of unnamed, annonymous support personnel that all crosstrain as blueshirt riflemen? What I've always thought is interesting is how the various specialized troop units are formed up - do you have to start as a Viper or a Blueshirt before becoming a specialized Viper? Which troops types generally fight on their own, and which are trained to fight in squads with other specialists? How long do you spend in a unit before you can retrain as something else, and are most Cobras encouraged to jump between the different units or stay in one? In my imaginary universe, Blueshirts are all around mutirole infantry that are trained in all sorts of weapons including sniper rifles, MGs and mortars. Wheras regular Vipers are used more in squads made up of a few Vipers and a few Specialists depending on the task at hand, and are also frequently trained as vehicle crew. Elite troopers generally prefer to fight with their own and are often crosstrained enough to do this successfully (you've got to figure there will always be a Snow Serpent in any given platoon who spent time as a HEAT Viper and still is handy with an antitank missile, right)? |

Let's say that there is a Cobra Standing Army, apart from it major Terrorist Activities. Then either as a part of that Army or as a Separate entity such as SOCOM, all the Special Forces. However as an Island Nation, Cobra's Navy may be as large and important as it's Army. Maybe not. But lets just compare Cobra Island to Okinawa? Just to be on the High Side. (I'll bet Okinawa is bigger than Cobra Island but it seemed like an easy comparison)
So there are 35,000 US Forces Personnel based in Okinawa. 17,000 Marines, 12,000 Air-Force (Probably 10 times larger than cobra would have) 3700 Naval Personnel (Probably Support for the Marines) 2,700 Army? However, the 7th Fleet is also based out of Okinawa and that is another 60,000 Sailors and Marines. Yet maybe only 1/3rd is actually there at any given time, as they rotate back with the states. I would guess Cobra wouldn't have much in the way of Surface ships anyway, so let's just count the 7th out of the equation. Let's just focus on the III Marine Expdetionary Force. All around a well balanced unit from the perspective that they have Tanks, Ships, Aircraft, and Infantry all in one. I can't find exact numbers for a MEF but for an MEB here is a break down of equipment and the like. Smaller than an MEF but big enough. Transpose those into Cobra Vehicles: Marine Expeditionary Brigade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ground Combat Element (GCE) See also: Ground combat element Infantry Regiment, reinforced ( Assume this is where most HUMVEES would be) 17 M1A1 Abrams Tanks = HISSII (The big ones) 47 AAV = (Mix of everything else? STUNs/Ringnecks/HISS V/ 27 LAV = HISS I 24 M777 howitzer = (M.A.G.G.O.T.S.) 24 81mm mortars = (IMPs\ Paralyzers) 36 60mm mortars= Adders 24 TOW missile launchers = RAGE Aviation Combat Element (ACE) See also: Aviation Combat Element Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 40 AV-8B = Rattlers 24 F/A-18 = Night Ravens\Hurricanes 4 EA-6B = Crimson Hydras? 6 KC-130 = Condors 32 CH-53D/E = Crimson Command Choppers 12 AH-1W = MAMBAs 48 CH-46E or V-22 = (That badass Cobra Choppers they refuse to make) 12 UH-1N = FANGS 45 Stinger missile teams = (How about 45 Stinger Jeeps?) No one cares about this last part but it's part of the force: Logistics Combat Element (LCE) Logistics Combat Element Combat Logistics Regiment (CLR) 1 medium girder bridge 6 cranes: 1 30-ton crane 5 7.5-ton cranes 2 600k-gal fuel systems 44 100-kW generators 75 5-ton trucks 9 Water purifying units 116 forklifts 5 bulldozers 3 road graders I figure all the wierd vehicles are test vehicles and there are only a few ever made such as the Stiletto or the Earthquake, or the BUGGs, Detonator or Hammerhead.

I like to think that a majority of Cobra Forces are regular Blue-Shirts. After a little time in then can op for further training as part of the Viper Corp. Either by need, coincedence, Coersion, they may move into one of the specialty Viper programs.
I feel like SAW, HEAT, Medi and FRAG-Vipers are all part of a typical Viper Squad. Vipers are somewhere between a Marine and and Army Ranger. I think many of Cobra recruits with prior military training would move into some of the more Special Operator Units after Viper Corps. All Specialty Vipers would hold the rank of at least E-5 since they have so much training. Top of the list (IMO): Snow-Serpents/Ice-Vipers = They have the hardest training of all Para-Vipers = SEALS DevGru Elite-Vipers (I know just a movie fig but I use them as Delta Equiv) Range-Vipers =Green Berets/ MARSOC Alley-Vipers= SWAT/SAS EELs/Hydro-Vipers= Regular SEALS Jungle-Vipers= LRRPs Crimson Guardsmen are the CIA/KGB Special Activities agents of Cobra. They get whatever training they need, and since they all hold higher degrees they are all considered officers 0-3 or higher. They may not command units, but they can certainly put a bullet in any unit commanders head and take command. I figure CG Commanders command troops and hold the rank of Lt Colonel. CG immortals are more the elite guard for CC and take orders only directly from Cobra Commander himself. If one of them tells you what to do you know it came right from the Commanders mouth himself.
