OK fellows it's been almost 20 years since the purchase of my last Joe since I was a kid. Now days I'm brought back into the hobby again, mainly due to the movie (I know it's not that good, but it grabbed my attention nonetheless).
A few days ago I went over the boxes of toys my dad got me when I was a kid, and found all these cool Joes, and I realized I only have like 1 Joe and the rest are all Cobras. Funny how two decades later I'm still more of a Cobra fan than Joe. But then I noticed the firearm accessories of the figs, and noticed that they all carried Russian/Soviet weapons. I know this may be somewhat reasonable coz afterall it was during the Cold War era when GI Joes are made. But now I look at the series, in comics and figures and guess what, it's the 21st Century and the Cobras are STILL CARRYING AKMs and Dragunovs??? Now don't get me wrong, I'm really hoping Cobra troopers won't get weapons that shoot laser beams and death rays. But come on, I thought Cobras' arsenal came from M.A.R.S Industries, the leading maker of weapons?? And M.A.R.S actually made weapons for the US and NATO! Some info of M.A.R.S from Joepedia: "M.A.R.S Industries is the result of 20 generations of McCullen clan family investments and is owned by its youngest member. The Military Armaments Research Syndicate and this company were created to be the world's leading private developer of weapons technology. It is a government contracted company which works in conjunction with the government and has many other contracts with countries and global peacekeeping organizations throughout the world including the UN and NATO, (and as is later discovered) Cobra. This company falls under Cobra's banner and also designs, builds, and funds the operations of Cobra. Well-guarded research labs in various nations all over the world allow them to bypass regulations and governmental oversight. In this manner, M.A.R.S. broke technological barriers of most leading developers. M.A.R.S. was originally founded in 1752 by James McCullen Destro I as a Naval Gun Foundry" So by the look of this Cobras should be armed with HK416s or M4s even, or is Mikhail Kalashnikov Destro's real name? By the look of the Cobra arsenal I'm thinking I'm correct? I only have two questions: 1. Who arms the Cobras? Are they armed by the Russian mafia or Middle Eastern insurgents? Because from the excessive/exclusive use of AKMs and Dragunovs I'm thinking this is the case? 2. Can we see some new standard small arms for the Cobra, like the XM8 or M14-EBRs maybe? I mean AKs are cool but they are also, if I may, OLD SCHOOL! Come on! |

Yes thanks Frank I know Marauders, his selection can arm a whole Joe army.
I'm not saying I don't want my Cobra figs to be carrying AKs, or I want to find replacements. I'm saying Cobras should start carrying more modern weapons in cartoons, movies (already did thank God), comics and yes toys! |

Well, obviously CC is too cheap to afford anything as expensive as an M4....

Think of it like this, you are a megalomanic dictator terrorist type. You spend billions on the latest armor, aircraft, and water craft (via MARS) and you want to arm your insurgents. Again you've spent billions on vehicles of all kinds, spent more on training top notch drivers, pilots, captains, and crews. This leaves your budget somewhat depleted. Thus you give your troops the most reliable, easiest to fix/replace, and easiest to get ammo for, weapon on the market, the AK and it's offspring.
Now if you look at the POC Alley Vipers, they have an upgraded weapon, they are more highly trained. As do CGs, heck even Vipers have their combined assault rifle (which I replace with Aks in my verse). So it's not that Cobra doesn't spend money on arms, they just do so wisely knowing that it's not going to be ground pounders that win a war but all the mech, air, and sea guys. Now this isn't a blow to infantry, I proudly served in the Army Infantry, just an observation to how a terrorist leader may think. |

Hmm, i think the problem is nostalgia...the old figures toted mostly Warsaw weapons due to the cold war, so when you retread the 80s figures, you do the 80s weapons. So most of the 25th figures have the same gear as they did 25 years ago.
Look at non-retread figures... Take Wraith for example, he's packing a P90 PDW. Crimson NeoVipers are packing those Bullpup Modern Kalishnikovs. So clearly, modern characters have modern weapons, more or less. |

As a general rule, I like the 25th/Modern Era figures to resemble their 80s counterparts as much as possible. That includes weapons and gear. I just prefer that universe to be set in that era. That said, any modern updating of the characters and continuity (ROC, POC, Resolute, Renegades, etc.) should be outfitted with weapons and equipment that reflect the changing times.

The U.S. government. Had something to do with Reagan and Ollie North, if I recall.
