The other members of the Arashikage thought that SS had killed the Hard master out of jelaousy for favoring SE, but in reality even though he maybe was a bit jealous, SE and SS were still best friends bond together by war and saving each others lives on more than once...and what kind of a friend would SS be if he would have abandoned their friendship just because SE was getting really good at something that SS had been an 'expert' for a long time now. SS was probably even expecting that SE would become good since it was he who gave the invitation to SE to join the 'family business', and those kind of invitations will not be given to just anyone. (Remember Zartan, he did not get in, so he had to basically beg an honorary member the swordmaster Onihashi to 'take him in' trough the 'back door' to get acces to the compound) Hama never actually said which one of them was better...they never really fought eachother 100% trying to kill one another...everytime one of them was holding back, mostly SE and what kind of martial artist/friend would SS be if he did not realize that? (eg. on top of the train SE was more concerned about saving SS than actually fighting him...and on the "test night" when Firefly was watching, SE was more concerned for SS to not loose 'face' in front of his own clan, to which SE still considered himself to be an outsider) At one point even SE thought the possibility that SS really killed his uncle, but it did not make him abandon their friendship...Scarlet mentions this when SS infiltrates the pit that: "SE could never do anything to harm you, no matter what you did." to which SS replies that;"And you know this in your heart?" implying that he already knows this, but does Scarlet? So basically the conflict between the two has been exaggerated(spelling?) just because they were close friends on opposite sides (well technically they never were on opposing sides, as SS was sort of 'undercover agent' pursuing his own agenda and had to work against the joes occasionally). Imo SS never cared rats ass about the conflict between the Joes and Cobra or the assumed rivalry between him and SE... he was just doing his own thing. Thats why he is my favorite character... He did what was necessary to get to the truth, even save CC out of prison...he did not have to like it, but he did get the job done. He never was extremly loyal to CC, actually he despised him, but CC knew who his uncles killer was so SS had to work for him... he even mentions this after he saves CC from the joes saying :"Go now, before I change my mind." sorry for the rambling, but Imo SS is by far the most interesting and well written character in the Joe mythos, just because he is so layered and complex, and with his own agenda. It helps that he has that 'samurai' type of mentality and sense of honor and that he is a bad ass Ninja... I like Ninjas...when they are not overdone (Ninja force anyone?) |

Wow you guys are getting deep, which is a good thing I would rather this be interresting than become stupid. But what about the fact that new fans can get their hands on the cartoons easier than the comics? And well all know how different the comics are compaired to the cartoon. Personaly I'm a fan of both and have a special place in my heart for both. But take my cousin, he was only into the cartoon and compairs everything to the cartoon. He's a big SE and SS fan. But how many people who just grew up with the cartoon see SE as the character that get too much love for a minor character? I think the Resolute origin is great for having to explain why the characters don't like each other in a one shot story. I don't know how the new comics handl SE but I personaly would mind see SE pushed as more of a commando with ninja training if you get what I'm saying.

thats a really good point,
veitnam was really the last unknown war it was the first to be televised at least breif clips as the media was able at the time, and its soldiers like those of the wars before it have an enigma we dont feel today because its always so close . Snake-eyes could be seen as a ghost of that war, in the comic that was the case. at some point in the run many of the characters showed that they were damaged by war, even Fred7 Sssoooo whats you think of the POC toys? |

Sailor Joe, you raise some excellent points. But personally I think you hit the nail on the head when you said guys come back here for "Japanse wives."
I think the beautiful women here have a LOT more to do with this country's appeal than the mysticism! I've been to Yokosuka and there's not a lot there I considered mystic...but as a non-military living in Japan, I was thrilled that they have a Taco Bell which we can't get anywhere else in Japan! But in all seriousness, I love it here. It feels more like home to me than where I'm from. I feel very comfortable here and even after living here for many years, I still have moments when it seems very strange and exotic and wonderful. It's summer festival season now...girls in traditional Japanese yukatas, food stalls, beer, fireworks! Nowhere else I'd rather be! |

Wow, where did this thread come from? O_o
At the time I just thought it was cool SE, the "good guy" always wore black, and SS, the "bad guy", always wore white. I wonder if Hama knew the significance color has to Asian culture. I believe black was considered to be the color of neutrality and heaven, and said to be the "king of colors", while white symbolized brightness, purity, fulfillment, and death. Color in Chinese culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia On second thought, maybe not. Red is traditionally the color of happiness over there and the Red Ninja were never that cheerful. Maybe he just thought it looked cool. >_>; |
