As far as gameplay experience and relation of sales, this is a sad truth. Video games are an absolutely great media outlet that have the potential to reach millions. When you restrict that game to the lines of a story already laid out, you hinder it's ability to reach. You're simply buying the game because of it's tie-in. But if you make the game an independent story and it's own form of media release. Then you have the ability to create sequels and further the line even more.
I disagree, I think the majority of the people who bought the RoC video game did so because it was GI Joe. You've also created an artificial limit on how cool a video game that's based on something else could be most likely due to past experience. |

I'm not really up on how one sells toys through video games, or the current FPS market, but I did use to game a fair amount and would love to see a strong G.I.Joe adaption. To me, as a fan fo the toys, G.I.Joe was always about squad sized teams and military specialists.
How about a first person military tactical sim, where you pick a squad of 2-8 Joes, depending on the mission, and take command of all of them, setting waypoints, creating fireteams that move together, etc. Something like Ghost Recon or the old Hidden&Dangerous. Each Joe has a basic skill level at various actions, an can carry some basic weapons (knife, handgun, rifle, frags), but each Joe also has special weapons and special skills. Tripwire and Lightfoot could set or defuse explosives much more quickly than most others, Snake Eyes simply moves faster in hand to hand combat, Roadblock can fire machine guns (including the .50 cal) with far more accuracy, etc. This would allow the player to play with his or her personal favorite Joes, and experiment with a bunch of different weapons etc. Depending on your gaming style and who you want to play with, you could approach the missions with guns blazing, - think, Shockwave and Spearhead kicking down the doors while Rock n Roll and Roadblock cover from the outside; or use a little stealth and ninjaesque skills to take out the guards quietly - send in Snake Eyes and Quick Kick, while Low Light and Spirit give covering fire from a tower. There would be drivable vehicles, certainly for the ground, and maybe even a few aircraft and boats as well. Of course it wouldn't be practical to make the entire Joe roster available for the whole game, but you could easily divide it into multimission campaigns, etc. Of course, the multiplayer options open up a whole world of possibilities... |
