No argument there. Just thought a game would be funner than the already failed big summer flick. Joe would translate flawlessly into a video game franchise and a combo of both a game and a movie would really go a long way towards adding life to the line.

The thing is that people are "asking for" new character in the toys. Introducing them in a video game is all well and good, but unless there's a toy right behind (ala Helix), it doesn't satisfy the desire of the "we want new characters" fans. It just presents another situation where characters have been introduced that may or may not ever get action figures made of them. Particularly if the characters from the video game are not embraced by other facets of the Joe media (cartoons, comics, etc...).
The key to brand success is having a successful media tie-in. Pretty much every A-list action figure brand out there right now starts with that as a "base." Joe has suffered simply because it hasn't had very successful media tie-ins yet. For whatever reason, people didn't embrace Sigma 6, and while RoC wasn't the utter failure some people like to make it out to be, it still didn't achieve the goals Hasbro wanted for the brand (Transformers-level popularity). Transformers and Star Wars have both prospered due to media, not video games. |

I think some of you are missing the part where video games don't really drive toy sales up all that much.
The best G.I. Joe game in the world isn't necessarily going to turn a bunch of people that have no interest in buying G.I. Joe figures into toy buyers. Likewise, unless the game gets rave reviews across the board, it's unlikely to snare people that are uninterested in G.I. Joe to begin with (heck, sometimes even if it DOES get rave reviews across the board it's not enough to make it a commercial success). Most of the "video game" toys out there are basically small, collector-driven lines put out by companies like NECA. Halo is about the biggest of these, and even that has even less shelf-space than Joe at most retailers (and also seems to be about the only thing keeping McFarlane Toys alive right now). Most "video game" toys don't even get sold at Target and Wal-Mart. So no, I don't think a video game is the answer to making Joe "more mainstream" again. I would certainly welcome a new G.I. Joe game that's better than RoC was, but it's not the "cure for all the brand's ills." |

I would agree with your hypothesis, but i do think it would provide the line with an additional revenue stream. I do think if the game is done well, in a non shooter capacity, and made accessible to kids...it could snag kids in to buying the toys. Ultimately though, the key to joe-dominance is putting out a quality cartoon. Since hasbro puts about .001% into any kind of Joe advertising, the cartoon is really vital to getting joe on kids minds and keeping it there.

I know the point of this thread was the introduction of new characters via a video game ... and we might have gotten off track with it... BUT
I was playing some Motorcross game that I got with my nephew for 19.99 at TRU it was fun - you go through a variety of different races using a variety of different vehicles - motor bike, dune buggy, ATV, stock car, big rig etc. You can crash up other vehicles and are armed with a turbo boost. The funniest part is the slow motion scene after your vehicle crashes / gets destroyed. What about a similar Joe themed game? You could chose from say... VAMP, AWE, RAM, HISS, Ferett, Silver Mirage, etc .. weapons could be optional or maybe earned throughout the race course. You could even go so far as to have drivers for each vehicle. |

Actually, the best "engine"/model for a G.I. Joe game would probably be the Battlefront games. A decent combination of third person action (using various characters), vehicle-based combat, and "flying" levels. Plus the ability to play as either Joe or Cobra and a decently strong multiplayer component.

I would have to agree with you again, although perhaps not in such a grand scale as Battlefront. Honestly, the format of the movie game was perfect, it was just done so poorly.
