Have a feature in the game where you create your own Joe or Cobra. Start out as a Green or Blue Shirt and work your way up through the ranks. Along the way you can add and upgrade your weapons and gear. Select specialties for your characters; pilot, SEAL, intelligence. Learn to operate vehicles, and pilot aircraft. You have to prove your loyalty to your respected factions. It probably sounds like and rpg but I think something like this could be fun. New characters could be introduced throughout.

The Gi Joe brand is alive and well. However as many of you have seen they have lost the clout they had in the 80's. One of my posts talked about how an old man at TRU told me they would have at least twice as much space a few years back. Well now we're dealing with 1 or 2 cases per TRU of the new stuff. I think in order for GI Joe to hit mainstream Hasbro needs to allow a good team to use the license to make a good 1st/3rd person shooter in order to attract a new following and introduce new tired characters. Halo branched off to toys after starting as a game and so have many others. If Hasbro would finance such a venture they could literally hit gold on the investment. The game and toy sales would be high if they actually took the time to make it right.
I think they could use a semi-futuristic theme where some of the older Joes and Cobras are now retired. Old Snake Eyes, General Duke, and stuff in some younger counterparts. They could battle a more politically involved Cobra threat from a fictional superpower or something. Possibilities are endless. |

I would welcome a 3rd person combat/adventure game, but the last thing Joe needs is to attempt to compete in the first person shooter market. It would be wasted money due to A.) Market dominating franchises B.) Rapid Market change (shooters are barely out before the next best thing bumps them)

I think some of you are missing the part where video games don't really drive toy sales up all that much.
The best G.I. Joe game in the world isn't necessarily going to turn a bunch of people that have no interest in buying G.I. Joe figures into toy buyers. Likewise, unless the game gets rave reviews across the board, it's unlikely to snare people that are uninterested in G.I. Joe to begin with (heck, sometimes even if it DOES get rave reviews across the board it's not enough to make it a commercial success). Most of the "video game" toys out there are basically small, collector-driven lines put out by companies like NECA. Halo is about the biggest of these, and even that has even less shelf-space than Joe at most retailers (and also seems to be about the only thing keeping McFarlane Toys alive right now). Most "video game" toys don't even get sold at Target and Wal-Mart. So no, I don't think a video game is the answer to making Joe "more mainstream" again. I would certainly welcome a new G.I. Joe game that's better than RoC was, but it's not the "cure for all the brand's ills." |

Well you're right it won't be the only thing that saves or makes it mainstream but it certainly could be a big factor in it. Coupled with a new cartoon/movie it can pump new life into the brand. My main idea is that it could introduce the new characters people are asking for and also help establish it in pop culture.

That's so wrong. Gamers always welcome games as long as they're good. A GI Joe game that's well done with a strong storyline and gameplay and graphics on par with the best shooters would definitely not be a waste of money. Ask Lego is those goofy games are a waste of money. The only thing to hold back such an idea would be Hasbro charging a game maker too much for the license and the game going the way of other licensed movie games. Off one game you can pump out 2-3 sequels also. So yeah the next best thing is out but you've established a fan base.
The reality of the gaming industry is that Medal of Honor:Inserttitlehere will stomp a mudhole in GIJOE:ARealAmericanShooter every day of the week. It has a built in fanbase and "street" cred by virtue of it's lineage. GiJoe:ARAS would be the new kid on the block. Add in the fact that who-ever makes the game has to compete with Halo, MoH, KZ, etc *AND* realize a smaller payout due to licensing etc. will crimp the development of the game. I mean, if a game haus is good at making shooters, then they will have an inhouse shooter franchise already. And who wants to help build a competitor to your own product? Lego games are popular because they are done well, and they do not have direct competitors really. |

The thing is that people are "asking for" new character in the toys. Introducing them in a video game is all well and good, but unless there's a toy right behind (ala Helix), it doesn't satisfy the desire of the "we want new characters" fans. It just presents another situation where characters have been introduced that may or may not ever get action figures made of them. Particularly if the characters from the video game are not embraced by other facets of the Joe media (cartoons, comics, etc...).
The key to brand success is having a successful media tie-in. Pretty much every A-list action figure brand out there right now starts with that as a "base." Joe has suffered simply because it hasn't had very successful media tie-ins yet. For whatever reason, people didn't embrace Sigma 6, and while RoC wasn't the utter failure some people like to make it out to be, it still didn't achieve the goals Hasbro wanted for the brand (Transformers-level popularity). Transformers and Star Wars have both prospered due to media, not video games. |

I'm all for it. But, when it's released for the Wii, it has to be one remote and the remote should be held sideways, just like Super Mario Bros. That whole two-handed thing, with both hands doing different things on different parts of the screen crap is just too much for me to grasp. But, I kick ass on Super Mario Bros.
