Remove the historically inaccurate black outfits, exotic weaponry, cleverly disguised pseudo-magic, and ninja tactics share a lot more in common with Al-Qaida than modern black-ops teams.
The whole point of ninja, at the time, were to sneak into enemy territory and deny them peace and comfort and destroy their morale by spreading fear and mistrust amongst the enemy through acts of murder, poisoning, arson, theft, and sabotage. I don't know about you guys, but that last part sounds an awful lot like a certain independent agent working for Cobra. In terms of historical accuracy, Firefly is a lot more like a real ninja than even Storm Shadow, whose honor and anachronistic weaponry would actually go against the ninja philosophy of using whatever weapon is best for the situation. Ninja were terrorists. |

See my previous post. Ninja were terrorists, in fact they were terrormeisters.
Maybe SE is the one who trained him? I believe several sources list SE as a hand-to-hand trainer for the Joes. Besides, ninja training looks better on a box than "special forces insertion techniques", especially when in a modern setting it's almost amount to the same thing. Of course how SE teaches them... um... yeah. If you're looking for in an historical sense, ninja training was whatever could conceivably help them accomplish their mission. A ninja disguised as a traveling musician would have to learn to play. One disguised as a traveling medicine salesman would have to know about herbs. They'd have to know how to cook rice without pots and pans, how to mix poisons while hanging from a rafter, how to tie the best knots for the best situation. Martial arts was such a deceptively insignificant part of it to suc h an extent that if a ninja had to engage in hand-to-hand combat he's already failed in a sense. 90% of what would constitute modern ninja training can be found in a combination of special-forces schools and international spy training. Michael Weston on Burn Notice is a perfect example of a modern ninja (of the good variety) even though he never even wears a mask. much of the training is about internal exercises, controling the physio functions of the body, the mind and the spirit, reaching a state of consciousness aiming at spiritual evolution and enlightenment. this is the basis of their teachings next excessive flexibility and balance exercise...excessive, and acrobatics too then a variety of weapons from knives to chains to swords and spears and so on...most of these are not instructed to Sf or intel the intel collection, camoflague, medicine and poisons, rope use, stealthy movement, pyrotechnics, tactics, psyops, yes some of this stuff but that is the outer circle stuff and then again only even about half of that IF is taught and it only psuedo relates to the ninja way of doing it sorry, it strikes a nerve when people speak so ill of something so beautiful |

um...NO! the ninja, had to adopt the invisible way because their small numbers could not possibly stand against the imperial armies of the shogun. they may have been insurgents but that doesnt make them terrorists. they werent religious or political extremists they just wanted to be left alone but they were taxed into poverty and imprisoned for forced labor, this caused some rebelions which resulted in revolutionary fighting methods. they used deception to confuse and mislead, hit and run tactics as the only means to the end and assassination to prevent humndreds or thousands from dying in needless battles. there are fare too many historical works which set you all straight on the origins agenda and attitude of true ninja...read them. yes, there are those that turned the art to profit but they are renegades and dishonor their teachings. ninjutsu is perhaps thee most esoteric and spiritual art alive today! they are not cultivated to be terrorists or killers, the path is about the hidden knowledge all men can attain to unlock universal truth knowledge and power-it all centers on inner peace with a preparedness for war
Ninja were thieves, assassins, spies, and terrorists, and for the record, they worked for money as often as ideals. |

Ummm.. yeah. That's all very new-age bullshit. A grand retcon by modern "bullshido" schools. Some were revolutionaries like you say, most were employed by Daimyos and yes, even the Shogun (though never publicly, as it would be seen as a severe loss of what they called "honor").

I think it's stupid that they made everyone and their grandparents into ninjas. Firefly included.
