To me he's a saboteur as he was conceived, but my idea is that he is quite skilled in martial arts and evasion tactics. I figured he'd want to know that stuff in the rare case he gets made and has to defend himself/escape.
But a ninja? Hell no, GI Joe has too many already.

rather than being "a ninja" hes probably a bad ass merc that trained several martial arts, like ninjutsu, krav maga, chin na, hwarang-do and kali (chosen at random but are among the best of each culture). i studied some ninjutsu, among other things... im not a ninja... but i can sure as shit throw down. do it for a living ;)

I have always found Firefly to be an awesome character from his appearance to his portrayal.
In my universe, he is a trained Ninja, but doesn't abide by the codes nor does he feel the need to flaunt it via his appearance. His goal is to get paid. My favorite version was that of the Cobra Reborn book, where he appears out of nowhere, keeps his dialogue short and to the point and leaves without a trace, even surprising Storm Shadow. This is what Firefly should be....Silent & Deadly. The whole point of ninja, at the time, were to sneak into enemy territory and deny them peace and comfort and destroy their morale by spreading fear and mistrust amongst the enemy through acts of murder, poisoning, arson, theft, and sabotage. I don't know about you guys, but that last part sounds an awful lot like a certain independent agent working for Cobra. In terms of historical accuracy, Firefly is a lot more like a real ninja than even Storm Shadow, whose honor and anachronistic weaponry would actually go against the ninja philosophy of using whatever weapon is best for the situation. Ninja were terrorists. |

Just being vicarious. To answer your question. Firefly = Saboteur. Explosive expert. Terrorist agent. Mercenary. Yes. Ninja, no. I don't know what it is with G.I. Joe but every guy with a mask is a ninja. I just purchased the City Strike Beachhead and even there in top left corner of the card back is says: "*Big Letters* City Strike - The G.I. Joe team uses their ninja training as they infiltrate a Cobra Warehouse" Who's "they" and when did any other of the modern day Joes besides Snake Eyes get "ninja training".... Hell, what is "ninja training?" Do they have an annual conference, eat stale donuts in the lobby, and watch boring PowerPoint slide shows? After a week of this "training" do they get a cheap certificate with a rubber stamp signature from some guy they've only seen in pictures hanging on Hawk's office wall?

90% of what would constitute modern ninja training can be found in a combination of special-forces schools and international spy training. Michael Weston on Burn Notice is a perfect example of a modern ninja (of the good variety) even though he never even wears a mask. |

I never liked Firefly being a ninja. I don't see him being a great hand to hand guy or anything. He's a demolisions expert. Nothing more, nothing less in my book.
Also, Zartan was never really said to be a ninja. He was learning sword making when he killed Hard Master. |
