in my book the cobra logo is one of the most known evil/bad guys/i mean trouble logos ever. think about it.. the simplicity of it makes it very powerful. just like with RE (Resident Evil) just an Umbrella will make you think (hey.. this must means trouble) if you ask me.. the day Hasbro decide to change the cobra logo (hopes that never happens) that will be the day i will buy my last gi joe.

^ This. It tells you everything you need to know about the organization in the symbol. Exotic, Mysterious, Deadly, and the name of the organization itself. So even if you've never heard of them before, you know you're in deep doo-doo.
I for one really liked the RoC Joe logo. It worked on many levels, but I really liked the fact that it worked as a unit patch. That said, it has nothing on the Cobra logo. I know there are alot of TF fans here, and the Autobot, and Decepticon logos are very cool, but they have nothing on the Cobra logo. There's something at the core of that logo that resonates.

Concerning the cobra symbol, you are looking for Mr. Ron Rudat. He was a conceptual artist for Hasbro I believe, and he created the symbol for use in the box art, decals, paint apps, etc. I know because I met the guy at JoeCon 2008.
When I spoke with him he mentioned that his cobra symbol originally had four ribs, but as time went on they increased the number to six and then eight. Not much more I can tell you. I hope this helps I posted this in the other thread. That said, ever notice that nobody wants the symbol to change? hehe

Had it been a bigger brand at the time, I assume that more people would have been involved with creating it. It's probably best that they never went to design-by-committee, and had just one talent focusing on it, because it turned out great. Simple updates like the rib increase are only natural over time, but I would consider it the same mark as it originally appeared, more or less. In fact, they probably needed a slightly different version once it was scaled up, because the 4 ribs may have looked a bit bulky at say, 300% the original size, and so on. Often, logos will have small, medium, and large versions with slight adjustments for use at different scales. My favorite thing about the logo is that the ribs/negative area of the inner "hood" create a sort of globe, with the hood surrounding it. Global Domination at it's most evil. |

the Joe logo is the brand logo, and has to be updated throughout the years to keep the brand fresh and relevant in the market for its current time.
The Cobra logo isn't the same thing, it is a design element of the toys and doesn't have to be updated. not that they can't, just that it isn't necessary. whether it is because of perfection or not really isn't the issue. but the 80's Joe logo looks old, whereas the Cobra symbol does not because they are really designed for two different purposes. it's simplicity works for what it is, a faction symbol, just like the Autobot or Decepticon logos, and doesn't need to be elaborate. the Transformers brand logo, on the other hand, gets updated to remain fresh, just like the Joe logo. |

I think the differential in changes also has alot to do with many changes of the Joe brand. It was mentioned in another thread that Joe is volatile right now. It's having an identity crisis that Hasbro is desperately searching to modernize and make marketable again. G.I. Joe has two fronts in which its logo needs to be solid. First as a corporate brand logo that appeals to fans, collectors, and child's toys. The other front is that of a military unit. Albeit, a fictional one, a unit's emblem is what signifies who it is and what they represent to not only others in the military, but to the world.
