i have been noticing a lot of similarity between old characters and "new"ones, for example:the new cyber viper = likeness to vapor,or Dr.lewis = likeness to mindbender, the helmet that formed around ripcord = likeness to wild weasel,i guess the point here is 2 sided, can anyone think of anymore?AND i do think that this is inadvertent being the creators of these characters want to be "inventive" yet they don't realize that they are letting the old bleed into the new, plus i feel these characters were so ahead of their time that they cannot be topped but only modernized which is also a reason that nothing that comes out these days is original, not a dis but more of a shout out to how awesome the minds of our time were back in the late 70's and early 80's

I don't think it's inadvertent, I think they're doing it on purpose. Making little nods to the history of the line when and where they can.

Uh, given that there was a whole other character in the movie named Dr. Mindbender, I really don't see how Rex Lewis 'resembled' Dr. Mindbender in any way.

true, but even if they were to try and create a new character there could be some kind of link to the characters of the late 70's and early 80's,i truly think we bested ourselves with imagery back then and ideas which has left movie writers and creative teams voided for the last 25/30 yrs

I think the helmet that wrapped around Ripcord was supposed to look like Wild Weasel.
The only thing similar between Dr.Mindbender and Rex would be the monocle ans the bald head. I think the similarities may have been on purpose to throw the viewer off, so we wouldn't know Rex would become Cobra Commander.

About the initial topic, I also think there are unavoidable archetypes and cliches. Mad scientists with their labcoats, a huge, often black guy being a powerhouse like Roadblock and Heavy Duty. Even a non-joe military based line would probably have a similar character. I remember an English teacher saying that everything is based o Shakespeare. I think a better way of putting it is that Shakespeare created a lot of stuff that is still remembered and appreciated, so he did it first. A couple of kids whose families hate each other is the most basic idea ever, but any similar story either has to be based on Romeo and Juliet or called a ripoff. Of course, if Shakespeare kept only writing plays with the same story as his own successful play, then he'd be considered a one-note hack. In that way, I can see how repetition of elements can be dull. I do dig clever and funny homages myself. |

agreed,i just feel that we(people that actually grew up in the late 70's early 80's) were fortunate to have witnessed history in the world of sci fi imagery, the way i look at it,gi joe was always about more than just military, far more

along with all that, I think "Costs Cutting" has alot to do with it...any little spot that saves Hasbro $ is surely ALWAYS taken advantage of(esp. with kids not even be aware of the older figures)...
