I'm less concerned with skin color change or sex change than this....
1983 we got Airborne 1990 we got a second character called Airborne but he had a differant filename...we all went 'Huh' but simply started calling the 83 Airborne I, and the 90 Airborne II. One can assume any thing one wants, maybe Airborne I died, retired, tranfered out, was courtmartialed, co-exists with the same codename but in differant operations, etc. They did it again in 83 with Doc Carl Greer, and in 07 with Doc Carla Greer. Again a simple labeling of Doc I and Doc II And AGAIN with Dialtone Jack Morelli, and Jill Morelli...all of which you can easily write off for the same reasons. More recently this was done with Breaker as well. So why not just have done this with Ripcord? I mean it would have been just as simple to name the guy Daniel 'Ripcord' Mills and it would solve so much debate. Maybe this is a new guy that has taken the Firefly personna. You know comics have done the I II III thing before with characters so its not unheard of. |

Anyway, with inter-marriage, the whole idea of race and ethnicity is becoming muddied. If you found out Alpine's mom was white, what column would you put him in? While I'm at it, WTH box does Vin Diesel check? >_> Quote:

Good question. I would have guessed no and was curious:
Cajuns (pronounced /ˈkeɪdʒən/; French: les Cadiens or les Acadiens, [le kadjɛ̃, le zakadjɛ̃]) are an ethnic group mainly living in Louisiana, consisting of the descendants of Acadian exiles (French-speaking settlers from Acadia, New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, in the maritime provinces of what is now Canada). According to Britannica.com its a category for enthicity on the US census. Last edited by Dod Ear; 07-02-2010 at 09:05 PM.. |

well I made the list ... primarily when the issue of race in G.I.joe popps up.. you would be shocked to realize just How many "minorities" are in the joe/ cobra mythos. Contrary to popular belief.
my only issue with the 5 packs was the greenshirts, that didn't copy the original TRU greenshirts that were multicultural. as for cajuns... I would definitely consider it an ethnicity, similar to Inuits being different than native Americans, West Indians (Haitians, Jamaicans, etc) being different than Africans, or even African Americans. although arguably, it could be considered culture rather than ethnicity.

I am confident in saying that people would have been pissed off about the "Ripcord" character no matter who it was. if they had made him Stalker, it would have been Stalker isn't comedic. because it was Ripcord, it was because he wasn't black. the issue in the complaints was really just about any change at all when it came down to it IMO.
That said, there is a segment of the dissatisfied population that could have been satisfied with black Ripcord, or black Firefly if they were new characters that paid homage to their predecessors as opposed to the actual character portrayed as something other than how they were originaly presented. A race change is done for shock, an interesting new angle is something different. The later would be considered character developement. What if Firefly had a black brother who was also a sabatouer, who took over for Firefly after he blew himself up? IDW could have their black Firefly, while adding an interesting new take, while not upsetting that segment of the fanboy population who can't accept change. |

Oprah's a real person. She's kinda set. Apache Chief is Apache it's in his name. Black Panther is a king (by birth) of an African nation; as opposed to being a president( elected) of an African nation. To be honest, I don't know the difference between Black Vulcan and Black Lightning.
By your logic, Ripcord can't be portrayed by a black actor because he's white, and Firefly too can't be black for the same reason. The goal is to come up with something about the character's origins that precludes them from a race change. What is it about Apache Chief that precludes him from being white? Chief Jay Strongbow was an italian. Why can't Black Vulcan be Asian? If he was, would that make him Yellow Vulcan? Are you suggesting Megan Fox doesn't have the range to pull off the role? |

They basically are trying to include a diverse cast of characters. Which G.i.joe already has. They also want to use Named characters that people remember. They just can't remember the characters themselves.

The whole nation of Wakanda could be re written as a nation of whites if the Black Panther were to be white-washed, or a white character could easily be introduced and a clever writer could come up with a story why said character had to don the mantle of the Black Panther. The same is true for Luke Cage. There is nothing about him that couldn't be tweaked to allow for his character to be white. Anyone with an imagination could come up with a scenario that would allow for any number of "black" characters to be reimagined as white in an effort to add a new and exciting dimmension to the character. I think your views on race may be a little cllose minded. Just my opinion, maybe I misinterpeted what it was you were trying to say. |
