I think so long as you are dealing with Cobra there is always going to be a very fictional element to the whole thing. I mean even the basic Cobra troopers wear bright colors - and many of the best loved Cobra villains look more like a Batman villain than a James Bond villain. Notice how some of the most realistic comic book stories and story arc avoided the unrealism of Cobra by simply having the Joes fight the armed forces of some made up country instead.
But G.I.Joe clearly is various things to various people, perhaps not always with the same characters or in the same stories, and that´s kind of the beauty of it all. I´m a military buff myself and would prefer Cobra to be a little more realistic looking. But Cobra wouldn´t be Cobra without a weird shapechanger and a guy with a metal face mask and all that. The new Cobra series demonstrates that you can do gritty within the context of a spy thriller story. I´d love to see a Special Missions series to be restarted for us fans of more traditional military missions. The only thing that bothered me a lot in the original Marvel series was all the ninja stuff. I like the idea of incorporating it a little, but after a while it really took over the story. Also, characters like Snakes Eyes got so powerful and basically invulnerable, they lost a lot of what made them awesome in the first place. |

I always liked the Unit as a live action version of Joe - a nice mix of military and Covert/spy action.
