The first Joe I bought was Snake Eyes. It was 1982, and the store was Bradlees. I can remember the commercial that was on the air at the time that featured all the new figures, and I thought they'd go well with my Star Wars figures. I don't really remember why I picked him of all of the figures, or what song was playing on the radio. The one time I do remember a song playing was when I bought Quick Kick and Lady Jaye several years later, and the song was "Who's Johnny?" by El Debarge.

These are great stories so far. The stale popcorn smell of Kmart was great. To this day my Kmart still has that stale popcorn smell and the funny part is that they have not popped any popcorn in years. Keep up with some good stories.

I had been saving my allowance for weeks. Five dollars a week for a $20 toy seemed like alot. I had even managed to pillage my lunch money for the last week (an additional $5) to cover the sales tax and another figure. I was already on my way to an extensive collection of G.I. Joe figures and a handful of vehicles. Most of which were received as gifts for my last two birthdays and Christmases (which sadly occur in the same week). So this shopping experience in the spring of 1984 was a special one.
We lived in a somewhat rural area in the Mojave desert of California. So trips to town were a once-in-awhile sort of thing. The mini-mall in Victorville had the Albertson's for mom to do grocery shopping, the motorcycle shop for dad to get part for his bike, and Kmart where we would meetup. Normally, I would have to accompany my mom in the grocery. But today I was excused to head to Kmart where I would do my own shopping. I would grab a cart and pass the snack bar. Deciding that I snack would be good and that I had time, I stop for a soft pretzel and soda. I managed to annex my funds by asking my mother for an extra $5 in which I was to buy lunch with. She agreed. I could have easily skipped lunch and added the money to my G.I. Joe fund. But mom would know and it could easily mess up my whole plan. After the snack, I make my way to the toy aisle. The pins are stocked full of figures. It always annoyed me how they randomly placed figures on these things. A dozen blue shirt Cobra figures and the random Duke or Snake Eyes (whom I already had) and the occasional Scarlett (why would I want a girl on my team?). I decide to forget about foraging for figures and move on to the main prize. I can hear the Muzak overhead and feel the soft fluorescent lighting beaming down on my own personal "cave of wonders". There, on the upper shelf rests the prize. I felt like Indiana Jones searching for the lost Ark of the Covenant as my ten-year old body stretches to get the large box overhead. A kindly clerk notices my struggle and offers to help. I agree and the pimple-faced clerk pulls it down and hands it to me. I can only imagine my face glowing as I admire the cardboard box with the flash and the red-white-and-blue GI JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO emblazoned across the top. For two years, I've wanted this and for two years of asking, I never got it. Today, I earned it. And at $19.99 + sales tax, the glorious G.I. Joe Skystriker XP-14F complete with pilot "Ace" was mine!!! The box itself wouldn't fit inside the cart, so I put it in the undercarriage. Mom and Dad haven't found me yet, so I can only assume that they aren't done. So I move back to the figures. After wading through the blue shirts and other figures in which I didn't need or want, I notice hanging in the back of the third row down, a Cobra Commander (now called version 1.5). I realized that my limited Cobra Army was lacking a leader (I did have Major Bludd but he really wasn't the "leader"). I decide to pick up the swivel-arm CC. He was the only one in the whole lot, so I assumed that he was a rarity and that was enough for me. Proud of my conquest, and now anxious to get home, I roll my cart to the checkout. The cashier smiled but was cautious of a ten-year-old making such a big purchase. She rang me up anyway and as soon as I hand her my money ($24.39), my parents walk into the store. Stoked about my find, I ask for the keys to the car where I'll wait for my parents to do their Kmart shopping.
