I tend to think of the Blue Shirts as Basic Support. Once the Vipers were established for the main attack force, Cobra pulled back the Blue Shirts as Support for the combat teams. I.E. M.W.R, Mechanics, Camp Maintenance troops. They are still able to go beyond the wire if need be. But this just might be my military brainwashed thinking and doesn't make any sense.

Technically, back in the 80s, the Vipers replaced the Blueshirts as the basic Cobra trooper.
But then the 25th brought them all together.

For me:
EELs = SEaLs Lampreys = SWCC (Special Warefar Combatant Crewmen, a NAVY Spec-Ops 'job', basically the guys that drove and manned the boats in Act of Valor) Aqua-Vipers = Other Navy jobs

With the introduction of the Aqua-viper, I could almost say they would be the Cobra Version of the Marine Corps. Although there are no Aqua-Viper figures aside from the Officer. After the initial Lamprey's filecard there was no mention of EEL training until the Defense of Cobra Island so it is almost like a different unit entirely.
Do the Lamprey's really need EEL training? Maybe Viper training as Amphibious troops? Maybe the Officer's would go through EEL training and the ones who operate the Man o War Submarines? It would seem easier to call the Amphibious troops "Aqua-Vipers" and then have the Lampreys as watercraft operators.

I have the blueshirts as the recruits / lowest level, who serve as facility guards and perform other basic tasks, and can fight if needed. After serving for a while, training and learning the basics of the Cobra organization, they graduate to Viper, where they have a chance to prove themselves on the battlefield.
Given Cobra Commander's background in pyramid schemes and shady enterprises, it makes sense to me that Cobra sort of ranks itself via pay structure. Blueshirts would get paid far less than minimum wage, but get food and barracks provided... Vipers get a basic salary, with income increasing dramatically as they specialize and rise up the ranks... Strato-Vipers were stated explicitly to have very high pay, I think on their file card. So why become a blueshirt? For the same reason people become street drug dealers... according to Steven Levitt ( An Economic Analysis of a Drug-Selling Gang's Finances ) the low level gang members make less money than even minimum wage, but if they manage to become a gang leader the rewards are great. Each gang member believes that he will be the one to become a kingpin, though few of them do. Cobra Commander knows that only a few will attain these heights, but that all of his forces will be motivated by it. The same math behind pyramid schemes. PS: many specialized Cobra operatives skip the lower levels when they join because they already have valuable skills, making advancement even tougher for the blueshirts. Using Strato-Vipers again as an example, their file card says they were mostly former army pilots; Cobra didn't teach them how to fly. Last edited by Spacey; 07-07-2013 at 10:25 AM.. |

Not a bad idea for a troll account, but the execution was sorely lacking.

My favorite topic, here's my take and I'm sorry if you've already heard it.
I assume some of the more specialty Vipers have higher ranks to start with in general, but they hold ranks just like any other unit. Therefore a Sgt doesn't outrank a Captain ever. I see it like this. Bottom rung is a Blueshirt. Really a private. He maybe gets some Cobra basic training/indoctrination and is handed the standard issue Dragunov Rifle cause cobra got those at a bargain price during the cold war. Once he gets a promotion he can continue to move up the ranks in the Blue Shirts regular units or he can get specialized. I would say a majority of the Cobra operatives are blueshirts. Supply guys, maintenance, security, transport, ditch-diggers, basic logistics. Should they want more money and danger they move to the Viper Corps. These are Cobra Assault troopers. Either a Ranger or Marine Equivalent. Should they start in the Cobra Navy then they would move into the Eel Corps instead of the Viper Corps. Once they complete the training they are Corporals (E-4) You first need to complete Viper/Eel training to move to any of the other Viper Specialties. For this fact alone All Specialty Vipers are at least E-5 sgts. Range-Vipers and Alley-Vipers and Para-vipers and Snow Serpents are all E-7 equivalents to begin with due to the amount of time they spend training To become an officer in any unit of Cobra you just have to be the most ruthless guy around. It's more of a title than anything else. You get paid more but you have to answer to someone above and battlefield executions of officers are common. So any Cobra Officer is not afraid of anyone. The rank of (0-4) Major is about as high as a faceless Cobra gets. Many of the named Cobras are at least (0-5) Commander. So Rip-It, Skull-buster, Claymore, Snow-Serpent Commander are all (0-5), and they are as ruthless and tough as Cobra has. ^^^^ this! |
