Re-imaginings, by the very definition, are not the classic I know and love. So, I agree with the OP 100%. Nothing about a new re-imagined cartoon, a re-imagined resolute, or the continuing re-imagined line being called pursuit of cobra will be the classic, like the 25th was.

I dabbled in Joe during the lean years (1997-2006) picking up a few here and there. Once the 25th stuff hit in 07 I was hooked like never before. It was like 1984 all over again. I drove myself nuts trying to complete my collection. Driving all over creation (often coming up empty handed) spending tons of money (which my wife just loved) but when it was all said and done I started to bore with it. ROC was the beginning of the end for me (I'm not gonna bash the movie. It's great for the franchise and I'm all for it) the figures didn't appeal to me and even the 25th figures were irritating me with the constant repaints and kit bashed figures.
I had to sit back take a good look and re-evaluate everything. I looked at my 25th collection (and while I thought it was cool) it didn't hold the same nostalgic bliss that my vintage ARAH held. My 2008 Shipwreck will never be as much fun as my 1985 version...so much to my wife's pleasure, I decided to sell/trade it all off. Not so much to get her off my back (but honestly it's nice not to be fighting over money) but more or less for me. I'm not gonna tell anybody who loves what they do to stop, but for me, I needed to break away from this addiction (yes, addiction). I feel so much better about life now that I'm not concerned about what's coming next and my blood thirst to have it. I've discovered there is a whole new world out there and it will take me a lifetime to track down all my beloved toys I had as a kid (be it Joe, Star Wars, WWF, Turtles etc)....for the first time what I do (what we all do here and love) feels like a hobby now and not an addiction.

there are some people who love G.I. Joe as a whole because of what it meant to them as a child and thus enjoy and look forward to new iterations of it, and then there are some who only love the G.I. Joe they enjoyed as a child and are only interested in those figures or new versions of them. neither preference is more valid than the other.
of course, if you are only interested in the Joes from your childhood you wouldn't be interested in new iterations. nothing surprising there, just as being interested in only Joes from your childhood wouldn't make you interested in My Little Ponies. |

The thing is that there's no program or whatever that will cure the addiction. I'm just wired this way. When I find a hobby I enjoy, I go at it full-throttle and guns-a-blazin'. And on the spectrum of things, Joes are much cheaper than say computers (another hobby of mine). But in it's defense, my skills in programming make me more money than music ever did. So, it's all about perspective. Anyway, plastic crack is like any other crack. You just gotta make sure you have a handle on it. And if it's any consolation, my wife isn't all that happy that I spent $300 in Joe stuff this month. But I guess it's better than spending that on booze, music, and parties (what I would have spent it on in the music biz).

More or less i collect to re-live and celebrate youth. Took me over ten years of doing this just to realize i should stick with the toys I had as a kid and limit my spending to just that stuff. It's more fun for me to stumble across something old in an antique store I wasn't expecting to find rather then drive from store to store to get some lame comic pack. Having kids truly tamed the wild beast in me...my former "addictions" are so far behind me that collecting toys now just a hobby to keep me grounded.

I started collecting toys as a way to tame my other "addictions". It worked for a while but it just took the place of the craving I tried to get away from and replaced it with the plastic poseable kind.

of course, if you are only interested in the Joes from your childhood you wouldn't be interested in new iterations. nothing surprising there, just as being interested in only Joes from your childhood wouldn't make you interested in My Little Ponies. There are 2 problems in the Joe universe: 1) People don't like change. So people want modern versions of old figures and don't care for any change of direction or reimagining. 2) Some of the reimagining has gone astray. Let's face it, the ROC movie was thrown together and not great. Not completely terrible, but not what it should've been. So 2 things need to happen to make the line a continued success: 1) Since us fans can't control Hasbro, the best we can do is to open our minds to new ideas and be glad that new Joe stuff is coming. Quit complaining about wanting things the way they were. If Hasbro goes backwards the line will die. They have to appeal to a whole new audience to continue success. 2) Hasbro needs to be better about their choices in reimagning the line. Being slow about releasing Resolute and the resolute figures was a bad move. Rushing to release a crap movie instead of making it something worth releasing was also a bad move. GI Joe needs a good story to make the line a continued success.

Yah, I don't do much driving around and searching. I mean, I hit my local stores and never pass up the opportunity to hit up the toy aisle (my wife makes fun of me). But I do most of that because I know the rules of collection. The best finds are those you don't expect.
Just this past weekend I found a near complete 86 Tomahawk in a tucked away antique shop for $12. My wife said the grin on my face was priceless. I never got that way collecting any of the "new" stuff. I'm still gonna be tempted by POC and whatever else comes down the line, but hopefully I'll have enough restraint to leave some of it on the shelf

POC, on the other hand, with its video game look, is exactly what G.I. Joe needs to appeal to new consumers being raised in the video game market. too bad it won't last long, but if it generates excitement that carries over to Renegades, it should be considered a success. |
