Hasn't it been said by Hasbro that no matter what, they want to keep the core characters on the shelf. Meaning SE.SS,CC,Duke , Destro ext

There are always going to be "core" figures with each toy line that keep getting produced over and over and I don't think any sales are needed for that.
GI Joe has Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Duke and CC for the most part. I am not saying that those figures get produced more than a Wild Bill or Snow Serpent but are made more often if you understand it. I am not sure if Hasbro gauges how the individual figures sell especially when you have stores like Target that classify all GI Joe figures with the same DPCI. For the casual person, it can be as simple as seeing which figures stay on the pegs the longest especially if all of the figures are produced in equal numbers. For example: If 500,000 BATs were made in the 25th line and people never saw them on the pegs often I would think they sell better than the Spirit figure (which also has a production run of 500,000) and could have been found on pegs more frequently.

What and who defined "core" to begin with? The chiken or the egg? |

I think many have wanted exact answers out of Hasbro. I think we have all found certain aspects of their business needs to be kept under raps and thats just the way it is. We may find out in 10 years at the next Hasbro tour or never. That simple if your looking for exact answers

How did they come to that conclusion though? Kinda pertains to how they determine what sells the best too I guess. Why Duke and Snake Eyes? Why Not General Hawk and Flint? Flint disppared for Duke...dunno why that is and there is way more Flint fans then Duke fans from some of the polls we have run here (I like Duke more but hell would like to see some change ups of the team every once in a while, at least in a different wave and not 5 waves with the same guy in a different pair of pants...)
What and who defined "core" to begin with? The chiken or the egg? Some might be based on the movies and/or cartoons, etc and others are simply just a given like the obvious characters listed above.

What and who defined "core" to begin with? The chiken or the egg? And look at Bumblebee from Transformers. He was released equally with all the other mini-bots. Why isn't Cliffjumper a "core character"? They're practically the same mold & they were both released in red & yellow. What makes Bumblebee so special? What about Huffer or Pipes or Swerve??? |

The thing is that the toy market changed between the release of ARAH Joe and the present day. The "core character mentality" didn't start to kick in until the early-mid 90's, primarily with the advent of TMNT, Power Rangers, and even G.I. Joe towards the end of its' run. It represented a huge shift in the toy market at the time, as the mentality of retailers changed in regards to how toy lines should be marketed and sold.
But the "core characters" are derived from the characters that are most prominent across the various media and most memorable to the general public (please note that general public means much more than just "hardcore fanbase"). Duke was the frontman on the Cartoon for the most part. Snake-Eyes ruled the comic book and always had the "coolest" figures. Scarlett was "the chick" and Cobra Commander was the bad guy leader with Storm Shadow as his "badass bodyguard" (and Snake-Eyes' counterpart). Yeah, to a degree it was Hasbro simply choosing who they would present as the "core" but I don't think anyone can deny that they leaned heavily towards the most iconic and "famous" Joes as established by the already-existing media. They didn't just randomly pluck them off a list. In other words, the Core Character mentality didn't exist when Joe first started, but developed over time. The characters that "stuck" with people the most became the ones Hasbro banked on. To answer the OPs question, I'm pretty sure Hasbro tracks individual figure sales by the case. In other words if there's 2 Snake-Eyes in a case and they sell 250,000 cases, they've sold 500,000 Snake-Eyes. I think they rarely adjust those numbers regardless of what sells through (though Snake-Eyes or even Duke are rarely long-term pegwarmers so the point is kind of moot). Yes, this does make Hasbro's claims of "Snake-Eyes is the best-selling Joe character" somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Last edited by Jmacq1; 06-03-2010 at 08:03 AM.. |
