I was screwing around with some publications and I have always been fond of the G.I.Joe blueprints font. I don't even know if there is a name for it. I have seen something similar used inside Marvel Comics but I didn't know if the typeface was available.
Does anyone know anything about finding this font? The usual ways of googling it have failed. If anyone has it, please pm me!!! Thanks!

There are so many fonts. A name would be handy. Although thanks for this web site because there are plenty of cool looking fonts to use.
I actually thought about scanning in individual letters and using that for the font. However, if I did that, does anyone on the board know how to use scanned images and convert those into a font? Still, I just wanted to ask again if anyone on the board has any knowledge of what font is used for the g.i.joe vehicle blueprints. I thought for sure back in the late 80s and early 90s Marvel comics was using the same or very similar font inside their comics in the letter columns and such. Does anyone remember anything like this? Thanks!!!

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but I too was looking for the font used on GI Joe blueprints. It appears that ERAS BOLD ITC is the font. It just needs to have tracking and scale adjusted to match.

Thinking about what you said, I played with the tracking & the kearning and I found that if you shave 1% off the tracking and bump the kearning by 0.2pt you are pretty much dead on. That being said, if you attempt to type a full line of text, the text on the blueprints in not in a straight line. It obvious because desktop publishing software keeps everything lined up. The line of text on the blueprint trails off between 0.06" to 0.12" as the line continues down the page. Back in 1982 / 1983 when they started making these blueprints, we didn't have Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Publisher. Indesign's predecessor Aldus Pagemaker didn't even exist prior to 1985. Having worked on desktop publishing in one form or another over the last 35 years, its my opinion that they typeset these blueprints in a similar fashion to the way they use to create newspapers. Back then words were pasted up to boards and nobody worried if one word lined up against the next. |
