It just hit me like a ton of brick . a question I’ve wondered the answer to for years.
What makes you collect toys, gijoe, baseball cards? Compared to o lets just say buying one and that be it. Now me personally. For starters I’m a big fan of the gi joe universe and all things in it. I have tons upon tons of stuff. But that doesn’t explain why I have tons and tons of other stuff as well. So I really started looking at what has caused me to not only buy these wonderful pieces of plastic crack. But what makes me protect them, and keep them in mint condition forever and never open them. And the thought of saleing them is horrific to me. Then it hit again As a kid I was the baby in the house of me and my older brother who was 10 years older then myself. His fun was model cars and swimsuit model posters. And of course torturing all my joes and star wars figures and turning them into pile of molten plastic or blasting into a bazillion bits. Well my mom got married to a new guy a few years later . and this new guy had a son my age. Great someone to play with my own age. Well low and behold our birthdays were 4 days apart. So every birthday and Christmas we got gifts together. If it was small gifts they were the same. So if he got a gi joe I got the same gi joe. one of them had to be marked so we knew whos belonged to who. It seemed mine was always the one to get marked. And that seemed to carry over in my adult life I never expected to grow up looking at the packages looking for dings, scratches, marks, stupid price stickers, missing parts and digging threw pegs looking for the best figure of a set. Or a matter of fact anything and everything I but I tend to inspect everything even toothpaste now. Its funny how this has spread to other aspects of my life. Or the one time I yelled at the check out girl at Wal-mart for grabbing a figure I gently layed on the conveyer belt . For her to grab it and crushed the see thro plastic. I admit it I snapped but it was the only one they had and I had just drove to 4 other stores to find it. And now it was ruined. Poor Star Wars 12” Darth Vader. I still cry for you. Some of you will laugh others will look at me like I’m nuts. But as a kid I don’t remember being that way. I remember running and grabbing the first one I saw. Flipping it over reading the file card. And running to find my mom. Begging for it. Taking it home ripping it open after I did what ever chore I promised to do for it. Taking my other figures out into the back yard on my 100% custom battlefield .. one of a kind btw. I will how ever sale u a copy all you have to do is assemble it for $300.00+ shipping the following is included 1- custom bag of dirt I mean terrain material, 1- custom bag or assorted wooden mini poles, barriers, doorways, window frames, battering rams, torches, clubs, stick like devices and of course roof rafters and guard post fences. 1 bottle of special custom base bonding liquid- 100% safe and best drank cold with that kool aid stuff In it. 1 – custom bag of natural camouflaging 1 limited edition hand written certificate signed and all 1 decoy box to store your base so cobra doesn’t find it or your mom. And instructions. As a bonus its 100% recyclable and bio degradable. You know me saving the planet even in the 80’s if you act now ill throw in a bonus gift Olive swords. . And for those who have forgotten olive swords are still the best way to get your entire army to become ninja warriors to try and kill storm shadow. Notice the word try. Act now while supplies last. You don’t want to be the only adult on your block not owning your own gi joe custom base! COMING SOON custom desert add on. O yea with a life like feel!!! Its like I brought the desert right to you Now what was I talking about? O yea so what has drawn you into the world of collecting little plastic men’s?

My life ended in 1988. It's been a giant pile of shit ever since. People are nothing but a bunch of smoking, drinking, lying worthless jerk-off's that can't be trusted. So I like the toys I had before 88, reminds me of the good days. I can't let go. My friend is the same way. We both buy the toys to ease the pain of reality & try to escape for a half hour or so.

personally, i've always had the collectors bug. even as a kid. it started with baseball cards in the 80's. then comic books. then came music, which changed my life completely. got me through high school.
once i got older, and i started writing, i began collecting vintage typewriters. one day i went on eBay to see if i could find an 84 SS. then bam... there it was... the 25th Anniversary line. i was hooked instantly. as a kid, i was not as well off as others, so i couldn't afford all the toys i wanted. as an adult, i was suddenly empowered with this facility to go back to my childhood and reclaim those lost moments. now, especially with forums like this, it's become a complete hobby that keeps me grounded at home, where i should be, with my loved ones - instead of doing what i was doing during my 20's. living selfishly. |

being the youngest of the kids. i often played alone. hell i remember getting my night raven for my birthday. and honest to god sleeping with the darn thing for about a week. and crying for days when my stepdad ran it over wit ha tractor while i was in the house getting re enforcments. no other toy ever ment and does mean as much to me as that night raven. it is my unicorn of toys.
my wife who was born in 1980 had no real idea who Gi joe was before i meet her. and i had to educate her. she has since been dragged into watching ever episode and oddly has retained ther names. she works at a local retail store that sold the 25th line. so i always got a text when new wones were aboutto be put out. shes never really complained about me collecting the,. she does get ill if my collection bleeds out into the general public areas of the house. not because there ther but she dont want people to touch them. she remebers the horror of when her nephew saw the shiny headed man and descided to play with him. she dove like she was going for a touchdown at the super bowl. but was to late it became destro vs godzilla and his G1 rubber band couldn't handle the pressure. PoP went destro her nephew thrwo him to the wind and started to go back for seconds. she prevented that. but was in fear for her life for not procting them. so now no collectables in community areas. just so u can stop moring for destro. i preformed surgery on him, h now has a new replacement spine. and is happly standing by his love the baroness.

Honestly I collect to relax. I don't know why but "plastic crack" helps me unwind after a busy day.
I only collect a handful of lines. GI Joe, Star Wars, DC Universe Classics, etc... I try not to go too crazy. I don't want to be an impulse collector. That's the road to hell and bankrupcy...... |

If I remember correctly there's allready been numerous of threads like this on this forum here.
But hey...what the heck. Why do I collect Joe's ? One reason is the facft that as a kid I was hooked on the cartoon-series, and always kept it in my heart for all these years. I started collecting again about 18 months ago, after seeiing GI JOE: the rise of Cobra, and the return of Joe stuff to the Belgian toystores ! I also started reading the digital comics again to see what happened over the years in the Joe-universe. So now you have an idea why some of us collect, GI JOE is in my heart and will never go away ! |
