For those of you that have read this excellent H.P. Lovecraft story;
We already know that Cobra-La was influenced by Lovecraft, and so it only goes to assume that the idea of Serpentor could have just as easily sprung forth from this story (and to a lesser extent, "Herbert West - Reanimator"). Now, most of us either love or hate Cobra-La, but how many of us would love to see the birth of Serpentor in a future live action film handled in this fashion?

I would *not* like to see this. TCoCDW, brilliant short story as it is, focuses on horror and occult magic, but I don't personally have any interest in seeing this brought into the GI JOE universe, as it pertains to Serpentor, or otherwise. I think GI JOE should always have some tether to science, technology, and reality. This is what differentiates GI JOE fantasies from other fantasies. Probably one of the reasons Hama never liked Cobra-La is that it can not be well-explained (or at all) within the afore-stated context.

I guess it's the same type of thing done in "Jurrasic Park," and even spliced genes, combining them in a manner that could be viewed as similar to the hodge podge that was used to create Serpentor. Lovecraft's story did this, except without laboratories he used chanting and occult texts. Either way, science could plausibly achieve this in the near future.

what one culture calls magic another calls science. Lovecrafts stuff is kind of a Hybrid of occult and science in a Hypergeometry quantum physics kind of way.
that being said the works of ole HPL influence a ton of stuff.

Very true. His works are still breathtakingly amazing to me. I'm still waiting for the day that someone can make a halfway decent movie adaption of one of his stories.

Heh, well, raising spirits from the dead is pretty far into the occult/magic side of things, although yes HPL did try to throw sort of an alchemy/pseudo-science element into it. Still don't think there is room for this in GI JOE land though.

I think TCoCDW, adapted authentically, could be a great TV mini-series. And, I am still patiently waiting for Guillermo del Toro's take on At the Mountains of Madness. I believe this story will be hard to adapt into a movie that will satisfy the typical short-attention-span moviegoer, and still honor the intense mood of eerie wonder that the story projected - but would still like to see them give it a try! |

There is a 90's adaption of TCoCDW, called something else, it is cheesy and also updated to be filmed in modern day as opposed to colonial U.S. times, but it still touches on enough of the story to be interesting.
