It is my considered opinion that No members of the Joe team were recruited without military training. Sure-Fire has a background with the FBI, but the fact that he's a CID expert leads us to believe that he's got some background with the Army. Bullet Proof comes from the U.S. Marshal Service. It's possible that he was sent to the DoD on an "inter-service transfer" but I can't imagine they would send someone without a military background. Bullhorn is questionable - a lot of fans read his file card to mean that he served in the FBI prior to his time with the Joes (his Convention card certainly says so), but if that were the case, he's be listed as an officer like Sure-Fire. More likely that he's a Marine - they train and Quantico as well. A lot of Joes' file cards mention their hobbies instead of listing thier military training - however, insofar as they have a Specialty like Infantry or a Pay Grade, they have to have attended some sort of Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training. Also, because the Joe team is a Special Operations Force, each member would have to be Airborne qualified.
Where do Quick Kick (Hollywood Stuntman) and Jinx fit in their "military service" prior to the recruitment that is specifically noted on their filecards (a lifetime of dedicated martial arts training doesn't leave much room for a 3-5 year military stint), assuming that they're not much older than they look? Realistically (in the context of a fictional universe where real-world rules need not necessarily apply, and clearly do not in many cases)...they don't. They get it after someone notices them and taps them to join the team, much like in the scenario PitViper posits above. Having a specialty and a pay grade is irrelevant in terms of the "training timeline" because that specialty and pay grade could easily have been assigned after recruitment and successfully passing whatever training requirements the team has (which would no doubt include much or all of what you mentioned above). Though from a "meta" standpoint every Joe being Airborne qualified may not be the case...the Joes are far from a traditional special operations force, and the fact that Airborne training is specifically mentioned on several filecards would seem to indicate that it's not necessarily the norm for every single member of the team. Heck, what's the point of dedicated "paratroopers" if every member of your team is a paratrooper/HALO Jumper? In other words, it is a bit of a chicken and egg discussion. Are all Joes military qualified/trained prior to being noticed and becoming "candidates" for the Joe team, or do they occasionally reach out to civilians/members of other agencies that have the necessary requirements and then give them the necessary training? I think it's safe to assume that the majority of Joes had prior military training. Probably pretty extensive in most cases. That said, there do seem to be a few members that are exceptions. Shockwave is a good example. It seems unlikely that he joined the Detroit police force, put in enough time to join SWAT, put in even more time to become an experienced member of the SWAT team, then left the police, enlisted in the military, and served long enough to be considered qualified for the Joes.
A much more likely scenario, and similar to Pitviper's EMT example, is that Shockwave joins the Detroit PD, makes it to SWAT, distinguishes himself enough to get noticed by Hawk or another Joe team higher up, and is recruited that way. On a side note, I like to think that Shockwave would have a chip on his shoulder where Stalker is concerned. A former Detroit cop and a former Detroit gang leader forced to work together on the same team, made even worse by the fact that Shockwave isn't really military and he'd be subordinate to Stalker. And Oliver, once again, I have to say I love the idea you brought up on the filecard thread about Stalker's gang background qualifying him as an expert in urban warfare. I don't believe any of his filecards have ever really made that connection and it's a huge missed opportunity for the character. |

I've actually been able to enjoy read this thread. I'm a filecard fanatic and as far as I'm concerned, these are the unwritten laws when it comes to characters in the Joe universe. And the filecard thread is an amazing source of discussion. But it's epic in size and hard to keep up. To be honest, the subject of filecards is something worthy of it's our arena, just as much as the comics and cartoons.
