I remember the original Astro Viper figure and it was pretty badass.
Then again I like Hydro-Viper too...which is pretty damn ridiculous. |

Nope. That was Star Viper, and Mindbender had altered him to have super-fast reflexes so he could pilot the Stiletto.

Star brigade could have been done alot better and the comic had like a 3 or 4 issue run with them if i remember they fought bats on the moon with the october guard, no crazy aliens or anything and star brigade is mo more of a strech than ninjas who can defeat tanks and sophisicated security systems...

Star Brigade suffered from a few issues.
-Colors some of the color schemes were dead aweful. -Armor-Tech limited movement oversized weapons and spring missile launchers. -Late in the line. I think if Star Brigade were redesigned it could come off better. |

I'm not saying Ninja Force is any more or less a stretch than Star Brigade but Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes having their own private little team to handle all of their family and clan issues is ALOT more believabe within the Joe universe than throwing an astronaut suit on Roadblock and sending him into orbit. |

I liked Star Brigade, I'd love to see it come back albeit as a more realistic sub unit, like a Satellite Weapons team or Air Lift unit.

I agree with the comments about odd character choice, but in the context of these comics, which was basically to place an infantry battle on iirc an asteroid, then having Roadblock there probably does make sense. Anyway I didn't think the comics were too bad, but probably could have been handled better, but as others have said, things were already on the slide and some of the figures were pretty poor. |

yes def roadblock no but guys like payload and scifi yes they should have made it set up with some crew for the defient and crusader and than some troops trained in zero g combat and planitary landings with simple color schemes like whites greys blacks etc not neon ahhhhhhh the neon craz annoyed me so much, and the mech suits could have been alot better like say the amp suit from avatar with more weapons as the armor bot. in fact maybe we should rehash the small team and have everyone post some customs of there re done figs/ vehicles |

Star Brigade suffered a lot from some pre-production changes. I think things may have been different if G.I.Joe had had the right momentum at the time (which would justify Hasbro spending more on it), but instead it was pretty focused on getting out a ton of figures and competing with all the new brands coming into the toy aisles.
Imo, Star Brigade has 3 distinct subsets: Armor-tech, repaints, and the new (or mostly new) molds. Armor tech figures were originally advertised to include electronic lights and sounds. That kind of explains the bulk of the figures. They likely would have been similar to Supersonic fighters, but with the electronics in their bodies rather than in a giant backpack. They also were initially shown with more chromed parts. Lights, sounds, & shiny! I'm not saying it is Joe of the peak years, but they definitely could have had a lot more impact with a higher input cost. Then the repaints felt like exactly that...repaints. They suffered from standard sprues (no original weapons repainted for Targat nor Astro-Viper really hurts). But as a whole, I like them. The Defiant, Crusader, and Stiletto need more figures to really give them a purpose. There are a ton of spots on the Defiant. Imo, it would be a shame if there were only a handful of space figures to fill them. And it seems that Hasbro kept trying to find the Payload mold. The word is that it was lost in South America already. Orbita came out in Brazil in 1992. How sweet would it have been to get a black Payload with green (or blue) details on a single card? Then the series that consists of mostly new parts is actually pretty good. Ignoring the aliens, Space Shot makes a great pilot even if you don't want him actually in space. I love Blackstar and Effects. They really are great molds, if not great paint jobs. Most of the time that I look at Joes anymore, I have to look at them for what they are and what they could have been. The most popular years are the ones that did a better job of living up to their potential. But that just means to me that potentially revisiting something like Star Brigade in the future should have more drastically improved results. A modern style Blackstar would be awesome. But I think even a modern Star Brigade Cobra Commander or B.A.A.T. would be sweet. |
