The Marvel run was pretty good. I do prefer the first 35 or so issues though, because after that they added too much ninja stuff and I preferred the more standard military story with a touch of sci fi. I gave the DD comics a try, but I found them lacking. Plus when I heard they killed off Flash, Lady Jaye and Mainframe, that made me glad I stopped buying the garbage they were spewing out.

While they have killed a select few of the Joes we all know from the 80's, it was mostly story-driven and not just for shock value. If you'll recall, Hama killed off Doc, Breaker, Quick-Kick, etc. This isn't a new idea in comics or specifically Joe comics.
If you stopped buying it prior to any of those events, you hardly know whether or not it was any good and are not really in a position to judge it as "garbage". DDP have been really good stewards of the license and have strived to stay true to the original Hama legends. Some arcs worked better than others, just as in the original run, but the last couple of years have been EXCELLENT. If you haven't read them, you're doing yourself a disservice as a Joe fan. Hey guys, sorry for my ignorance but I have actually been searching for the TPB for the DD comics and after stumbling on this thread, I figured I`d ask if any of you know of a good place to find them (especially the SE declassified)? I grew up reading all the Marvel comics but I am trying to get caught up on everything that has transpired in the Joeiverse.
Nachooooooooo!!! Holy cow those are awesome!!! Great idea! |

Well I read up to issue 24 in Elite. Good shit. Such a long time for CC to reveal himself, but it was worth it.
Gotta say Shipwrecks design in the beginning pissed me off. He looked more like that Caveman from Geico. But Destro in the last few issues made up for it. Honor. That is it. Still CC now has control of practically everything. Classified was descent. I read the Cobra and G.I. Joe reborn in the Reloaded series. Gotta say the Cobra issue is one of my favorites ever. God I love Cobra. Oh, I took my 25th Hooded CC and gave him the DD Cobra logo on the hood. He looks beautiful. In a months time, I have learned the true G.I. Joe. |

i don't care who gets the license, but i WISH they would bring in HAMA...that would pretty much insure that the continuity would be protected, and it would be done by a guy who LOVES the franchise.

Every Joe fan should read all the Marvel issues they can get their hands on. I would argue that the first 100 or so issues of the Marvel run are some of the best comics ever (excluding the occasional issue where Hasbro clearly forced a particular new character or vehicle down Hama's throat). DDP has had some high points, and I really am enjoying the WWIII arc to finish the DDP era, but the Marvel run with Trimpe, Whigham, & Wagner just holds an unusually high place in the pantheon of Joe comics, IMO.
too much history to be pissed away. |

Yeah, I'd hate to see the history tossed. Unfortunately, I think conventional wisdom is pointing to a reboot by IDW, much like they did with Transformers. See this thread over at joereloaded.com for more info on the continuity debate:
http://www.joereloaded.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3632 I can see the logic of making it more accessible to new fans that see the movie next year, but I think it's trading the history and long-term fans for some short-term gains from movie fans that aren't as ingrained in the mythos. Just my two-cents, but I can see it happening. If that's the case, I really don't see them having any interest in Hama doing it if they're starting over. Plus, rumor has it that they offered him AE a few years ago, and even he didn't want to deal with his own 25-year continuity, choosing the loosely connected Storm Shadow solo title instead. I don't think Hama is as married to the Joe mythos as some of us fans are. I'll be sad to see the Hamaverse retired, but I'll give the new title a shot. |
