who: nacho, I'm cool like that ... seriously though, it was done for me by Library Binding (link below).
how was it done: pick your favorite comics, divide them into reasonable-sized volumes (2" max, but I recommend 18-22 issues per), and send them to one of the binding houses that will make comics into hardcovers. how much: I'd say to collect another set of all the issues was about $350, and then the binding was another $350. I'd say that project was about $700 total, but I've bound a lot of other stuff in the last year or so. The cost was about $25 per volume but standard cost is only $15 (+ shipping) if you don't get the cover and spine logo stamps. I had my cover and spine logo dies made available to everyone who uses LBC, so you wouldn't have to pay to have it made, I did it for you. Binding comics has become a serious addiction, and I'm not alone. Check out this forum on the CGS boards: http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2...?showforum=163 The binding house I used was Library Binding Company: http://www.librarybinding.com/default.htm There are other good binding houses (like Capitol Binding), but LBC is the cheapest and does a great job. I've even gotten into making custom dustjackets for my volumes. If you're into comics, browse the forum link above and see some of the beautiful stuff others have done. I saw a few years back where someone had done Joe, and I knew I HAD to do that. The best part is, it's completely custom. You can put them in any order that suits you (reading order, publication order, or some mixture that suits you best). You pick the colors, the writing on the spine. It's your collection exactly the way you want it. Half the fun is just trying to decide how your collection should be done. Last edited by nacho; 04-14-2008 at 08:03 AM.. |

Speaking of, I just read the Devils Due Transformers GI Joe stuff. I loved it. I was sad at the death of one of the Twins, however was shocked to see GI Joe. [QOUTE/] the ddp Tranformers/GIJoe cross-over is set in an alternate universe, so Tomax or is it xamot isnt dead in the regular universe |

For the longest time, I did not really care about GI Joe, even as a child. I was too interested in Batman, Star Wars, ML, and Transformers. The only character I really knew was Cobra Commander. The 25th anniversary pics got on the internet and I really loved the CC in the boxset. I purchased him on ebay, thinking that I would not want the others. From August to Most of January that was the only Joe I ever owned. I Feb I bought Destro. I was actually looking for Zartan. I saw him everywhere the week before and suddenly he was gone ( Still is. I heard he is in the revision Wave Two at Target, which by the looks of today had all of wave two save Lady Jaye and Beachhead, whom I were after. I did score Buzzer though. Cool). The next purchase was the Snake Eyes/ Cloaked Storm Shadow two pack (I passed on the Twins not knowing who they were. THE GODDAMN TWINS! DAMMIT!!!) Now I am trying to keep somewhat of a balance on my teams which now consist of:
Hawk Scarlett Snake Eyes Shipwreck Flash CC (All versions save the Comic Pack) Destro (Will get IG when that two pack comes out) Buzzer Storm Shadow (Cobra Legions and Cloaked) Serpentor (Sucks) Scarface CG The Cobra Legions Troopers The HISS Tank with Driver. I will be picking up Lady Jaye, Zartan, Beachhead, Duke with Flag, Baroness (The one I want the most), Flint, and Bludd. A nice balance. If I see them, however, screw balance I'll be getting the Twins and the Dreadnoks) After buying the toys I decided to expand my Joe knowledge. Prior to this, I had only seen the two CG Movies (Which I like a lot. It makes me want a Mindbender 25th so badly), the two mini series, and bits of the movie (I love the opening). Well...there was also GI Joe The Epic Saga but that doesnt count. I decided to read the Marvel Comics. Holy Crap. Damn good stuff. I read it all. The moments that stood out were : Storm Shadow. Holy hell, I only knew his origin, but I didnt think that he would be so...complex. Great writing. My favorite moment would be him and Billy doing their chess game mentally. Speaking of, Billy. Every issue he was in was awesome. I want a Billy toy. CC: When he went incognito before he was "Killed" ruled. Destro: He is another Storm Shadow. Complex, driven by his love for the Baroness. My favorite moment was probably him in the Cobra Civil War, chilling on a boat watching it out. Baroness (Did I mention that I prefer Cobra characters?) Her origin issues were unexpected. Good stuff. Snake Eyes: He is a great character, but overused. I love how he pretty much is the cause for Cobra. The last issue. Powerful stuff. Hawk: I enjoyed his character. I dont really have a favorite moment, but it was nice to see him in command. Stalker: The most unexpected on the Joe team. He was fleshed out a crapload for a guy who rarely appeared in any other form of medium. I want a Stalker toy (Like Zartan, just when I decided to buy one he sells out. Surprisingly that didnt happen with Serpentor...and it's obvious why) Scarlett's Sister: The whole Coma thing was very memorable. Zartan in SS's origin: I felt bad for him. I really did. Damn you CC! CC's "Death": Had I not known about it, I would have been shocked. Thats like shooting Anakin Skywalker and claiming yourself Vader. Well written. Baroness's brainwashing at Silent Castle: Destro again proves how awesome he is. Oh, and Flint. Silent Interlude: Duh. Billy's Trial: It's memorable for the backstory of Cobra. However, it was referenced to for a good 5 issues before it actually happened. Mindbender: I love the bit with him mentioning the brainwashing of Zartan and Destro to CC. Cobra Civil War: I enjoyed it. Nice ending. GI Joe: THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND! Give him the 25th treatment! CC rebuilds Megatron: NICE!!!! Speaking of, I just read the Devils Due Transformers GI Joe stuff. I loved it. I was sad at the death of one of the Twins, however was shocked to see GI Joe. That's really it. I am pumped for the movie now. I cant wait to get more of the 25th guys (Come on Mindbender). Yo Joe! I wish more "fans" would follow your example and enrich themselves with this literature. ESPECIALLY the ones who were impressed by the Devil's Due comics but haven't read the classic stuff.

I found the Whigham run from about issue 31 to 57 to be my all-time favorite stretch. The creation of cobra island, the whole Ripcord/Zartan battle, and the invasion of Springfield.... I get excited just thinking about how good those stories were. Whigham's pencils pretty much define joe comics in my mind. Everything since is compared to that era as the gold standard.

Up until this last year I'd only read a few of the Joe comics, and been more a cartoon universe type-person. I was fortunate enough to get all five Marvel TPB's at retail price before then, and I got most of 51-100 for $1-2 each. I've since got up to $150 and I'll probably get #151 if I ever find it cheap but I'm not too focused on it.
My Joe collection is actually arranged in displays depicting scenes from the comic books. For example, I have a SAW Viper flanked by 2 Vipers mowing down Doc, 25th Breaker, (still need a Quick Kick), Heavy Metal, Crankcase, Thunder, Falcon, Cross Country, Crazylegs, and 25th Duke. I've tried to select pivotal moments from the Marvel run to represent in action figures. I am an idiot when it comes to uploading/posting pics on the net so if anyone cared to talk me through Photobucket (and deal with it like they were explaining it to a very stupid 2 year-old from the 1800's) I do have a digital camera and could post pics. |

Nacho,
That is Awesome Man...Very Nice Collection!!! I never knew you could even have something like that done...So much to learn, so little time. I really like the way that looks and I bet it makes it really easy to read. So do you send the books as they are originally and they take care of the rest according to your specifications on the cover? Mr. Savage Last edited by VandalSavage; 04-15-2008 at 01:52 PM.. |
