When I was 11 for my birthday, My friend's parents and my mother searched out an entire wave of GI joe figures (I believe it was the 1991 assortment) and between them got me every new figure released at that time. My Dad ended up getting me a handful of Vehicles to go with them.
I was in heaven.

I remember a couple of things pretty clearly.
I remember going to a friends house down the street from me. He had some of the 1982 GI Joes, and that was my first introduction to them, and pretty much where it all started. I remember the commercial about the gliders with those kids flying them around that pristine back yard. And then I remember my brother and I building a huge base in the back yard. We used a couple of the little milk cartons and cut them up to make zip lines that ran from the trees. We made Storm Shadow some working bows and arrows out of some vine, some thread, and toothpicks. We tore open this huge bag of popsicle sticks that my mom had bought for some reason or another. We used them as planks to build our base in the trees. They made a great helipad, and platform. We spent an entire day making all that stuff. Oh, and I remember getting the USS Flagg for Christmas. That was cool. |

Man i loved the sky patrol commercials with the sky raven that was a frickin sweet vehicle and one i really want to own someday. Also I liked the commercial with overlord and his dictator. if i recall it was a real actor dressed as overlord. Guess I love 89 and 90 alot. Heck another figure i played with a "TON" was the 89 snake eyes that they are getting ready to redoe man i loved him. played out all his weapons then i used the little plastic swords they use to scure pickles and olives on the salad bar at the steak house as his weapons for a long time. I gotta say i am thrilled we are getting snake eyes III and i pray for night creeper.....please oh please

My fondest memory was setting up joe HQ with my next door neighbor. We would battle the older kids who lived 3 houses down and collected joes. Man that was the best seeing everyone's collection all at once. It probably took all of us longer to set up camp then actually battling. lol

My neighbor had the U.S.S. Flagg. It was the only Joe toy that I ever wanted, but never owned. Around the 6th or 7th grade, we decided that we were too old to play with Joes. So, I suggested that we go out with a bang and we had a final battle between Joe and Cobra. We had all of my Joes/Cobras combined with all of his. It all ended up with one huge mess scattered around his Flagg.
The next week, I boxed up my figs and sent them to my younger cousin in California. If time machines are ever invented, Im goin back to that day and kickin my own butt !! |

wow, man, i do not know where to begin. i was born in 78, but, having an older brother, i owned most every 3.75 ever made. Christmases where we got two whales, a terror dome, multiple snow cats, multiple sky strikers, multiple rattlers, ferrets, claws, a hydrofoil, sky hawk, raven, condor, things i cannot remember names of: silver motorcycle, bridge layer, the dual rotored helicoptor, the heli that had the tail that dropped down, the y-wing jet.... jeez, everything, man. my summers were filled with trips to wal-mart, k-mart, tru, getting pretty much anything i wanted. grandparents would go on road trips and stop at every store they found to buy us figures and micro machines for surprises. i had so many ss, se, cg, eels, bats. hell, i had most every joe, star wars, he man, and transformers made in the 80's to early/mid 90's.
how the hell my bro and i turned out to be two of the most level-headed people around i will never know. probably cos of times like when my grandfather popped our hands and said "you're not even saying 'thank you'" as we loaded a cart at tru. such a kind and gentle man getting upset at us kept us straight for the rest of our lives. i used to look back and wish i had all the pieces and accessories to all the figures and vehicles and that i hadn't opened some of them; wishing that they would remake some of them. and now that i am older and my wish came true, i... don't care. i buy a few figures and open them and remember. i don't buy 30 of each and put them on ebay, or "troop build," and save them for later. i enjoy them. i enjoy buying them, looking for them, opening them. i even buy a couple here and there for my older brother, who nearly choked up when i gave him se and firefly and cc for Christmas. better than that? my 5yr old nephew has a field day when he goes to Grandpa's and gets to play with our old joes. i hope these are still going in some form when i have a kid in a year or two. your stories are better, guys. i had so much that i cannot tell you a specific memory of getting what, but because i appreciated it then and now, i wouldn't trade mine for anything, ever. |

I remember seeing the '82 commercials for the issue #1 of the comic and the action figure debut spot. I thought they looked really cool, and my younger brother thought so, too.
Mom must've seen us at Kmart wandering to and fro between the Empire Strikes Back figures and those really neat new GI Joes, 'cause though we never asked for them we got some for Christmas. Flash, Short Fuze, Scarlett, a Cobra Enemy and the RAM!! The Cobra guy had to have backup so we used our new TIE Pilot and an AT AT Commander figures. ;D |

I've got a few favorite moments like playing with my brother's Joes as a kid but it wasn't until I got my own that I really started to love Joes. When I was a kid I had really bad asthma, and after my one and only asthma attack in which i passed out. I remember a few days after I had to go for a check up at the doctor, and I remember just being really scared and didn't want to go, but of course my mum said if I was brave and go she'd buy me some toys
So of course I went, and everthing was fine, more or less, then we went into Belfast and bought a v4 Snake Eyes and an Optimus Prime. I have never been so happy in my life, it was bliss. Of course my asthma has subsided, but my Joe love has not! Oh and also my Dad used to go on business trips alot and my bro and I missed him alot, and when he came home from a trip one day when I was about 8 or 9 he brought me a 12" Hall Of Fame Duke, and the news he wasn't going to be away so much anymore Man I love Joes...
