Zartan, Firefly and the Dreadnoks
Firefly gets none of the ninja-ness and is just bad-ass on his own. Zartan gets rid of the ninja-ness and is no longer in charge of the Dreadnoks. The Dreadnoks become a real biker gang and not a joke one. They become an army of their own. Think Sons of Anarchy but twenty times as bad-ass.

I already mentioned Firefly and Zartan, but the Dreadnoks could have been so much better. A force that was feared (by both sides) instead of a punch line. That's probably why I never really liked them. I'm making this change in my Joeverse starting today!!! |

Awesome ideas. Agree 100%.

He needs some troops/resources at his disposal. I have been a HUGE nok fan since day one and when I played with them, they were a huge force, even taking over Cobra at one point. I agree that they could have been used much better. |

Having Zartan in charge is not bad, but I like the idea of him being a loner. A little more creepy as in you never know when he'll show up or where he really is when out of sight. He might just be the Viper standing next to you.
I could see him being totally callus and uncaring as well. He was pretty evil in ROC, and I liked that. Being the leader of the "Noks he's a lot more accessible, and then you throw the whole family thing in and the character become much softer around the edges. |

Nuhuh MONKEYWRENCH needs to be in charge of them...not Zartan. Zartan can go freelance. Monkeywrench was the smartest of the noks anyway, Torch is just the muscle, Rippers has the cool toys and hardware and Buzzer...well he just cuts down trees and yaps alot like the gieco geko...chipchip cherio!

I'd make Billy evil as well. Like Father like son. If Cobra Commander is a badass, and he was my father, I would most likely be right there next to him leading my own brigade.
I would have another set of Brother's in Cobra. Like if Skullbuster, has a brother that is an Alley-Viper, just to through in a real side to Cobra. But like some of you had mentioned that class of 84 bad guys has so much potential. Copperhead, Wild-Weasel, and Scrap-Iron should have been in the forefront way more. We had to wait until Phoenix Guard to show up before they did anything cool. I'm sort of excited to see what IDW does with Interrogater. He's one of my favorites and a one shot showcase comic is always cool. Still if he is related to like Dr Venom I might be upset.

Here are my initial thoughts:
1) End the "near death" ninja stuff. I actually like the SS/SE dilemma, but the mystical ninja stuff took things in the wrong way. SS was killed by the baroness - not "almost dead". SE can't keep getting away from Cobra being in a near death state. (And why didn't they ever do anything with SS having a weird bond with Serpentor do him being in the genetic "soup"? That had some potential.) 2) Work on the rank/authority thing. 3) Get rid of the "everyone is connected" thing. 4) Explain Cobra Commander's military prowess better. Why would be people trust and be led by an incompetent failure? In fact, this goes for much of the Cobra leadership. 5) Delineate better Cobra versus Dreadknoks versus MARS. Often, you would have them at odds with one another in the comic, and then you would have them fighting side by side again. I liked Destro best when he was treated less like a trusted general in Cobra and more like a guy who was contracted to be there. Distinguish better between the true "believers" in Cobra and the guys who are there for the money. 6) Cut out meaningless characters. 7) More Oktober Guard. Maybe even give them their own series. (This was seemingly almost done in the Secret Missions comics. They were there quite often.) 8) Never allow a guest writer. Chain Hama to a desk and make him write. He can have vacations if he gets his work done ahead of time. Sorry, Larry, those guest comics were hit and miss and took us out of the amazing story you were creating. 9) Never let Sunbow or DiC anywhere near the GI Joe mythos. Hire Harmony Gold/Carl Macek to create the cartoon. Anyone who can allow main characters to die without flinching deserves a chance with a military cartoon. 10) Don't make Zartan a shapeshifter. Make him a master of disguise, maybe even of illusion.
