I remember getting the original hooded CC in the mail. Still have it somewhere. I was never into the Fridge - I just thought it was straight up stupid... It's good to laugh at now. I'm surprised at how legit Sgt. Slaughter has become in my opinion - I held him in contempt back then, because I took my Joes pretty seriously, and I thought it made a mockery of them. Ever the purist...

Does anyone remember calling " The Fridge " back in 87 to get his special combat skill to send away for the figure? It was 50 cents a call back then, and man did I run up a phone bill I recieved a Fridge certificate today and just laughed when I remembered calling. I was going to try the number just for kicks, but worried it may be a porn line number now lol
Does bring back memories though..........I feel bad for some of the teenage members, you guys missed some great years for toys in the 80's.Yeah we may kick the bucket before you, but we had an original carded SE at 1 point, SO THERE joking ofcourse. |

I can recall clearly sending in my points for the first version of Cobra Commander with the battle helmet. Then a year or so later mailing in for the Hooded version. I also got Duke in a mail away (that was my all-time favorite), Sgt. Slaughter, and The Fridge.
I think it's all the excitement of waiting for those mail aways that's got me addicted to eBay and on-line purchasing in adulthood. There's still nothing cooler than knowing that one of these days you're going to come home to find something awesome in your mail box, or waiting at your door. No wonder I have no money.

I was pretty young but I remember either being there when my dad helped us fill out the fridge form or making the call. The old memory on that one is fading.

Cobra Commander (hooded) was my only mail-in figure from GI Joe that I ever got. He was so awesome to have! I sent away tons of POP's for all of the Star Wars mail-away "preview" figures back then, though (4-LOM (now known as Zuckuss), Admiral Ackbar, Nien Nunb, The Emperor, Anakin Skywalker)!

As for the fridge phone line I never called it yet I remember the ad for it. The fridge was always the first to go in any combat we had.

I remember sending off for the hooded CC. That was so agonizing waiting for a mail in figure. My brother was more into football, so he got the Fridge and Sgt. Slaughter figures, but I remember calling the Fridge number. I used to buy most of my figures at a store called TG&Y.

I can only remember 2 mail-away offers I took part in; one was for the Steel Brigade figure and the other was from some kind of GI Joe magazine - basically you could send away for a collector's case and it came with bagged figures and filecards for Major Bludd, Cobra Officer, Zap, Grunt, Rock N Roll, Flash, Doc, Airborne, Stalker and Short Fuse.
And I think it was really inexpensive; like 20 bucks plus some flag points. Me and my younger brother pooled our allowance for that one LOL ... good times. Kind of funny, but since I grew up in Chicago I thought a Fridge action figure made sense. It must've seemed strange to everyone else to have this NFL player stand out and get an action figure treatment. Last edited by Wylde Weezle; 04-01-2008 at 08:44 PM.. |

Not really. The Fridge was one of the NFL's most popular players from the 80's (especially from the '85-'88 seasons).
