I don't agree with kids being "blank slates"
They're blank about knowledge or culture, not about tastes. That's part of their personality. If kids happily "watch anything colorful and flashy", every single kid would also like Teletubbies, Barney, Jem, or any other flashy show. Heck, if every kids did, even us would like them cos we were kids too! :P Kids are blank slates, as they grow they gain experience from which to base expectations. Saying that a very young child is a blank slate doesn't imply they aren't unique, it implies that they have no societal expectations about how cartoons should be made. |

You seem to judge yourself and others by your perceptions of sophistication and being cultured. I maintain it is common knowledge that very young viewers have no expectations of sophistication, and that it is ridiculous to imply that some very young children are more sophisticated than others merely because they've been bombarded with mainstream media. It's coming off as a brand of classism, you are entitled to your opinions but in regards to your repeated use of the word sophisticated I have to call it as I see it, it's ridiculous.
Young children are blank slates and will happily watch anything colorful, they haven't yet developed their own understanding of the world, nor do they have any expectations because expectations imply they have experience from which those expectations are derived. I know when I discovered Robotech as a young kid it blew everything out of the water because the characters had a sense of realism. Rick Hunter went from being a pacifist to realizing that sometimes use of arms is necessary, there were competing ideologies among the "good guy" camp. People grew, matured and even died on the field of battle. For a Kid that was just so much that I'd never gotten from a show aimed at me before. And that's becoming more the norm because of the huge influx of anime in the late 90s and early 2000s. Kids aren't stupid, they aren't happy just to watch anything that's bright and colorful they have the ability to discern between two stories and decide that they like one better... they might not have the vocabulary to express why they like one over the other, but they have tastes and likes. It's not about being spoiled, the medium of animation, particularly in the west, has evolved over the last 30 years. Even Transformers Animated had that sense of continuing development to it's characters. I think kids these days appreciate a sense of continuity to their shows that was simply absent in most of the 80s offerings. That's what I was reffering to... not a snobby sense of superiority. Characthers who resonate and hold true because they grow and evolve and learn. And the kids can grow alongside them. Quote:
I was talking about ARAH/sunbow, I believe it stands on its own for very young viewers, who it was originally designed for (fist fights, nobody gets shot and so on) I never said flatly that they shouldn't reinvent GI Joe, just that ARAH/sunbow didnt need to be reinvented, I've always loved the idea of Hasbro maintaining 2 or more series based off of the Joe IP
Well ROC doesn't have the A Real American hero tag on it... it's GI Joe Vs Cobra, yes. But not RAH.

I think that the the show is dated in terms of prodution quality and execution, even more so compared to the better examples of current action animation (Most DC and marvel animated shows, and a buttload of anime) where not only the stories are more complex/developed but the visual quality along with the action are top notch. Most 80s cartoons were little more than 30min commercials (The real Ghostbusters being a rare exception), and (hope I do not get crucified for this) so was ARAH. The stories from the comic books were far better (even with their eventual descent into ninja world). In terms of the action alone, I remember as a kid longing to see a fight sequence where pilots would not jump safely out of their planes or were lasers were not fired aimlessly on both sides. I too watched robotech and thought (even as a kid) that the action and story were so much better than the average cartoon (little did i know at the time It was anime and not a regular cartoon), heck even gatchaman with its silly every episode half the city gets destroyed format had better action and storytelling. And kids do notice, maybe 5 year olds not so much, but older kids do. In ARAHs defense, back then censorship was harsh, so while I am not saying that every cartoon show should have beheadings and such, it was very frustrating to see a show about war where no one ever died or even got injured, or in shows like he-man have the biggest fight nothing more than he-man throwing skeletor into a puddle. So in those aspects, the show is very dated and does not hold against a lot of todays action shows, regardless of nostalgia.
