I've never been in the Forces, so I really don't know...
What's the difference between rank and grades? I've noticed some JOEs who are E-4 Specialists hold the rank of Sgt, while most other E-4s are Corporals. Who bows down to who between an E-4 Spec. Sgt, and an E-5 Sgt? And for the likes of Duke who has "turned down promotions", do they still bump him up a paygrade while keeping his rank at 1SG? For my own Dios, I've bumped up a lot to fit their "priority" in my stories (Flash is now an E-7, cause he's my fave, Flint is an E-8 simply cause (gasp) I'm following the ROC Duke and making him an O-4 Major) Just need more to go on.

E1 through E9 are Enlisted Personnel. O1 through O10 are Commisioned Officers. E4 is outranked by E5, O3 outranked by O4 and so on. ALL Enlisted personnel are outranked by Commisioned Officers. O1 outranks E8, etc.
Titles may vary by service, but the grade is equal. Navy E7 is Chief Petty Officer. Marine Corps E7 is Gunnery Sergeant. I was not in the Army, but I believe E4 "Specialist" is unique to that branch. However they would be subordinate to E4 "Corporal". If I'm wrong on that, my apologies to all our Soldiers. I myself was a Devil Dog. Hope that helps.

Specifically, all E-4s in the Army are Specialists unless given the rank of Corporal (also E-4). With Corporal comes additional leadership responcibilities.
Depending on your installation or MOS, this could mean next to nothing or be an extremely stressful position to hold. I've seen Corporals blown off without consequence, and I've seen Corporals who were treated with the same respect/fear as NCOs. XD Additionally, I should mention that Corporals do not get any extra pay for their increased duties. It's mostly given to those who are singled out as showing promise in regards to becoming NCOs. E4 Corporals in the army are jr ncos in any combat mos they are not too common and those that are e4 corporals are usually that rank from a demotion and not whats commonly called a "half step" promotion. the e4s corporals that I have come across nearly always demanded the respect of any sgt by having company call "at ease" however more often than not myself or other ncos would round the corner soon after and the thunder was stolen from them.
so i ask that in your joeverse make corporal ranks reserved for the enlisted screw ups (like my scoop and sneak peek) |

Yeah, but, Breaker was only an E-4 Corporal and was a god with the com. Clutch, Cover Girl, even ZAP were all straight line E-4s (initially)

I NEVER understood why there are E4s in GI Joe. You can attain this rank without any real work and in some cases, can COME INTO the Army (nowadays) as one.
I think the late 70s early 80s, when GI Joe was being concieved... maybe E4s were different or the rank had different expectations? I don't know. It's the same as a beat cop who's been on the job for a couple weeks being put on the SWAT team... as a team leader or something. XD Tom

I was a Navy man, and I can offer my own experience as a squid: becoming a petty officer to us meant you were finally locked into a specialty, or rate. I was a sonar technician, or ST.
E-1 Seaman Recruit E-2 Seaman Apprentice E-3 Seaman E-4 Petty officer third class (learning to be a supervisor, lead person) E-5 Petty officer second class (first real supervisor expectations, team leaders) E-6 Petty officer first class (department-level supervisors, junior management) E-7 Chief Petty officer (department manager) E-8 Senior Chief Petty officer (department manager) E-9 Master Chief Petty officer (program/division managers) Shipwreck would not be wearing working dungarees as a chief. He would wear working khakis. only the spec ops chiefs (seals) and Sea Bees chiefs wear a working uniform akin to the E-6 and below. Recent and ongoing uniform changes do change all that, though...

I always called army specialists "Full bird privates". That's what the eagles is for on their rank right? Just like a "Full bird" colonel. lol
