Check "Is Cobra Racist?", "GI Joe Leadership Vs Rank", "GI Joe - International or strictly American?", "Cobra Troopers or Vipers", "Does Cobra BUGG stand for anything?" or similarly worded threads. They're topics that've been discussed since the inception of 'Joe. I guess some folk just feel they've discussed it already. I liked these threads, just to clarify! : ) Tom

Please stop talking. The amount of insider information that you have is exactly zero.
Know how I know this? Because you posted a declassified flyer which was meant for fun as a NEWS ITEM. No one would ever tell you anything because the VERY FIRST THING you would do is post it here. Probably incorrectly. |

Interesting question. In thinking about it today, the closest analogy I can think of to Cobra from the real world is Mao Zedong and his guerrilla army. One of the things Mao focused on was building cadres in given areas, who could then convert others to the cause or raise a fighting force as needed. So based on that, I think Cobra's numbers would be fluid - you'd have a hard core of 'revolutionaries' (Vipers) and they could call up auxillary troops (Cobra soldiers - the originals) as needed. The old Cobra soldiers seem like an auxillary or militia force compared to the better outfitted Vipers.
Then you have the Siegies, who struck me even back in the 80's as Spetsnaz-like: going behind enemy lines, in deep cover, ready to hit critical facilities when activated. So in summary, I think the numbers are fluid; Cobra, despite sophisticated technology much more resembles the organization and tactics of a guerrilla army; and it contains a hard-core of supporters with members who affiliate as it suits their orders (CG) or mutual interest - i.e. - the Dreadnoks. The one problem with my analogy is that Cobra is undeniably high tech - guerrillas are typically the opposite. Where Cobra gets the funding for its government-equivalent level of technological sophistication is something that really doesn't seem to be addressed in the cartoons or filecards - I'm not familiar with the comics. There have been guerrilla movements which were self-financed through crime, most notably Peru's Shining Path which cultivated cocaine to finance their insurgency. By the late 80s, they were bringing more to the US than even the Medellin cartel. Last edited by cerasus; 03-19-2010 at 10:26 PM.. |

Most seem to think it's no larger than 5k to 30k from what I'm getting. How big would you say is their Air force? From one of the later issues when Cobra takes over a small middle eastern country it looks like they have an air force of several hundred. |

In issue one of the comics, US intelligence indicated that the island Doc Burkehart (sp?) was being held captive on had 1200 Cobra troops. It also had an airfield that Short-Fuze mortared (which had at least 2 fighters and a large cargo plane on it, so it was at least large enough for that).
This was a location that was considered expendable by Cobra Commander, as I recall. |

I think cobra command could be enormous, including troop, spec ops, droids and not too mention the dreadnoks and other wealthy aristocrats that don't wear cobra colors, it would be impossible to put a number on it
