1- Mindbender wasn't introduced until 4 years after Cobra. Monocles are a classic accessory for villainy. As is baldness. 2-Madame Hydra/Viper usually has green hair. Secondly, the Baroness did not wear a tight leather suit until 2 years after her introduction. She usually wore a blue jumpsuit like everyone else in Cobra. 3-Cobra did not have a ninja until 2 years after their introduction. Following the success of ninja turtles in 1984 (same year Stormshadow appeared)... everyone had ninjas. |

Yes but the suggestion for Cobra to be Paramilitary came from Larry and was inspired by Hydra right?

As I recall the quotes, after Hama accepted the wiriting job for the comic he asked who they fought and Hasbro hadn't planned that yet, so he suggested a terrorist boogeyman group (not sure how involed he was in the naming and such). I may have my years a bit twisted, but I seem to recall at that time it was fairly topical to include a terrorist group with plane hijackings and hostages and such - PLF and Libya and so on.

It's not necessarily a direct homage, but Cobra and HYDRA both spring from the same archetype - The would-be world-conquering terrorist/criminal organization with above state-of-the-art technology, colorful uniforms, and "faceless legions of terror" led by a comparative handful of more colorful (and competent) individual members.
In a metafictional sense they're kindred spirits but not necessarily immediate family, so to speak. Same with Kobra, AIM, and The Hive, and arguably even the Hellfire Club. All different twists on basically the same idea. |

If you do a search for the Fury Force, there are some similarities to the original joes - probably just a coincidence, or maybe Hama influenced things when he came on board. SS when he was in Vietnam looks like a twin of one of the characters (although later he was deemed to be a predecesor for Tunnel Rat). Another character was actually named Steeler. And there was a Commando that was masked and who was an enigma called "Spook" who used bladed weapons. Of course, there was a female intelligence operative (she was blond and from Israel) and an African American guy with a mustache (this time a grenadier with a boonie hat), but that is where the comparisons really end. Look below for a couple of links to see more:

The old Hydra homage in the original Champions game (1981) was Viper.
Google failed to find me any vintage pix. |

Hi Guys,
I know that we have made this connection in the past, but here is a chilling picture that brings the inspiration even closer than before. Here is the link: Hydra - Marvel Universe: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios. I suck at posting images.. I clearly see : - Dr. Mindbender's inpiration with the monacle. - A woman in tight black suit with black hair, like the baroness..who was named Madame Hydra and was later known as the "Viper" - A ninja, you know cobra had a Ninja...... Just interesting to me. Anyone have any other parallels between Hydra and Cobra? |
