Why is Duke a core character? Scarlett & Snake Eyes were part of the original lineup but Duke didn't come out until 84. What makes Duke so special? Because he was used heavily in the cartoon! Instead of Duke that could have been Blowtorch or Recondo or Mutt. But they pushed Duke so now Duke is one of the characters that everybody recognizes & just can't be left out. Ripcord is the best example. Now because of the movie Ripcord is a recognizable core character. They can do the same thing with a ton of other characters. If they give a big part in the sequel to one of the 1990 characters like Ambush, Bullhorn, Pathfinder, Rampart or Stretcher then they'll become recognizable core characters. They just need to stop using the same 4 or 5 characters constantly & start using all the others. Not my first choice but at least they're starting to build up Sgt. Stone. If they give Brendan a bigger part in the sequel then Sgt. Stone will be on his way to being a fan favorite & core character. They need to start doing the same thing with more of the characters. And now that they covered the Snake Eyes / Storm Shadow back story in the 1st movie can they leave it alone now? I think the new generation has been brought up to speed on that one through the recent Resolute & live action movie. Can they leave that alone for a while? Or will they blow 1/4 of the sequel on it? |

They are doing it now. Which is why we're getting things like POC Recondo. But this isn't the 1980's and the market is much different. ROC is the highest-selling Joe line since the 80's. How many Dukes did it have? How many Snake Eyes? And it performed better than the more varied 25th/Modern Era line. Hasbro knows what it's doing.

I agree many of the background Joes would be great to see more of.

I respectfully disagree. POC is starting more and mroe to feel like the 91-94 era of gi joe...and why wiouldnt they release a Sci-Fi in the new stuff..i would think with the more sci fi lookign stuff he would fit in perfectly...and i can maybe understand not putting lowlight out, even though he could be integrated rather easily, but not sci fi.

I'm pretty sure Robo-Joe isn't going to have a comeback in the RoC sequel. The 90s were somewhat unkind to this line. And while we have seen amazing customs on this site of terrible ideas like Captain Grid-Iron and Col. Courage (ranks of these characters were just punchlines for jokes), I don't think you are going to see new molds of them any time soon (except perhaps from the GI Joe club (see Big Lob)).

However, overall I agree with your sentiments. We need a bigger variety....but the line needs core characters as well. I hope we see the new cartoon take on the same type of feel as the new SW Clone Wars. They have their core characters (Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka) but they also dedicate entire episodes to the development of other supporting characters like Mace Windu and Kit Fisto. I think the same thing could be done with the Joe cartoon rather easily, sort of like the old Special Missions issues outside of the mainline comic.

There's no cartoon to give those background Joes the exposure they would need to get made into figures.
If there's nothing to provide the "hook" and make the kiddos want to buy that figure, then Hasbro and the retailers won't take a huge risk to put that character on the shelves. It's why every wave has at least one CORE character in it, to help the retailers order it. The thinking is "they love Duke, they'll come and buy the new Duke and hopefully they'll grab a couple of these other guys cause they look cool". And just because something worked in the 80s is no gurantee the same practice would work today. The kids attention span is shorter, and unlike us who bought the brand, kids don't seem to be doing that as much nowadays. So they have the CORE charaters as the hook saying "hey kid, you liked Duke, well here's another one, and well you're checking out this Duke, take a look at these other guys here".
