Would it kill them to use some of the other characters for a change? Everybody knows the Snake-Eyes vs. Storm Shadow back story. Do we really need to see it rehashed in every single cartoon & movie? I'm really sick of those 2. I don't care about them anymore. For a change I'd like to see them focus on some other characters. Look at all the characters after '87 they never use. They never use any of the characters from '88. Blizzard, Budo, Charbroil, Hardball, Hit & Run, Lightfoot, Muskrat, Repeater, Shockwave & Spearhead and Max. I don't know anything about any of those characters. I never ever see them.
Why does Hasbro do it this way? They're always talking about keeping everything "fresh". They're constantly changing the packaging to keep the line "fresh" & "new". Well Duke & Scarlett & Snake-Eyes & Hawk are old & stale! Enough already. I wanna know more about Spearhead & Max & Footloose & Leatherneck. I wanna see some of the post '87 characters used for a change. What's up with Ozone & Clean Sweep? And who the hell are Scoop & Recoil? If they insist on using chracters from '82-'87 then how bout giving some of the action to Sci-Fi (my favorite Joe), Low-Light & Blowtorch? There has to be somebody that works at Hasbro that would agree with me. Why aren't the fans complaining about this to Hasbro at the conventions? Isn't there some way to get them to start using all those other characters we never see? Can't they give Storm Shadow & Snake Eyes a break already? I really don't understand how you guys can stay interested when it's always the same old thing done over & over again. Now the new cartoon is coming out & we'll probably see the Storm Shadow vs. Snake Eyes origin story done all over again. As if anybody cares at this point. Listen up Hasbro !!!!!!!!!!! Not To Mention RAPTOR !! lol

That arguement has been used for years and yet we still see nothing that backs that up.
GI Joe was never more popular than when it expanded the roster. In fact, overdoing the core characters appears to be a detriment. 1993-94 all the core characters were redone to death and look where it got them. Valor Vs. Venom had the same problem. You honestly believe that if the "core character mentality" were such a detriment to the toy market that the people that make billions of dollars selling toys every year wouldn't at least attempt an alternate model? You honestly believe they haven't thought about these things? Is it your supposition that a business will not do all within its' power to insure that it remains a successful business? If new characters/more obscure remakes were a sure-fire license to print money like some folks here seem to think, THEY'D BE DOING IT. And yet, here we are, where the core character model not only rules the roost for G.I. Joe, but every single mass retail action figure line on the market. Generally, if a business model holds up as long as this one has...it's because it works. No, G.I. Joe isn't as popular as it was in the 80's. Guess what? It never will be again, either, no matter how many new or different characters Hasbro puts into this line. That has little to do with the "core character model" and a whole lot more to do with the shrinking toy market and much more stiff media competition from video games or other distractions. It ain't the 80's anymore, and never will be again, and Hasbro has a hell of a lot more information to base their decisions off of than we do...especially those of us that apparently feel the entire toy market should hinge on our personal desires before any business realities. as intresting as this has been to read im gonna have to say that the only way to get a clear cut conclusion on this topic is to contact hasbro and ask for the sales and manufacturing data for all 3 3/4 gijoe properties from the 80's onward and then get a financial specialist to compare the info taking into account inflation and other market factors over time to truly see what sells and what doesn't.
Of course getting the data is unlikely and so the only thing that we can go on is our opinions which will vary no matter what making this a pointless argument. |

Of course getting the data is unlikely and so the only thing that we can go on is our opinions which will vary no matter what making this a pointless argument. It doesn't take a huge leap in logic to figure out there must be a reason for that. The bottom line is that what the comparatively small adult collectors' market often wants is not in tune with what will make them the most money. |
