There have been lots of debate about the role, and popularity of Ninjas... But whatever your opinion is, I think there is something that should be defined... What makes you a "Ninja" versus "Martial Artist"?
1. What are the qualifications? 2. What set of skills must be attained to earn the title of "Ninja"? 3. What separates Martial Artists, Ninjas, and Ninja Masters? As a teenager in the early 1990s I came up with my own qualifications: 1. Ninjas always seem to have a sword so its logical to assume they have to know how to use it. The only art for swords that I know the name of is "Kendo". Featured in the second season episode of GI JOE ARAH where Sgt. Slaughter is misstaken for Wet Suit at a martial arts competition. 2. Ninjas seem to be superior to regular Martial Artists so I assume they are masters of at least 2 forms of unarmed combat. 3. Ninja masters probably are masters of several forms of armed and unarmed combat. (hands, feet, swords, nunchucks, Bo staff, etc.) Therefore: How do you define a Ninja and or a martial artist? 1. All Marines, Special Forces, Navy Seals etc. go through unarmd training in mixed martial arts. But are they ninjas? 2. UFC fighters are experts in mixed martial arts. They are not to be under estimated. But they don't use swords, Nunchucks or throwing stars... So would you call them Ninjas? 3. Scarlet is a master of Karate, Ka Bar knife (classic army infantry knife) Throwing stars, Crossbow, Garotte, and numerous sub machine guns. Pluss she has marine sniper school, and Army Ranger school (which includes airborne parachuting). So she would be extremely competent at killing you silently close up or at a distance. But is she a "Ninja"?? ...So I say What makes a Ninja a Ninja? Last edited by IronMan76; 02-19-2010 at 09:12 PM.. |

surely a ninja is a master of all combat disciplines armed or unarmed??and being a ninja is a trained from childhood thing??in ancient japan there was no honour in being a ninja they were considered dishonourable by samurais because of their all round sneakiness.as for quantifying how one becomes a ninja.....its probably best you dont pry to much...i would imagine its not the sort of thing they would just make public knowledge despite the fact that every second joe seems to have been a ninja... in answer to your questions im gonna say no to every one.. as for the joes, the only ones classed as ninjas are:the hard master,snake-eyes,storm shadow, possibly kamakura, and jinx the others i would say are low rent ninjas for hire, less training= poorer skills.....but thats just my opinion....

You are a Ninja if:
Your first name beings with "Snake" or your last name ends in "Shadow".

These are the Martial arts that I have some familiarity with: (mostly refferenced from Larry Hama's writing on the GI JOE File Cards)
1. Kendo: Sword Fighting practiced with wooden swords. 2. Ninjitsu: Martial arts invented by Ninja assasins in Japan. Real Ninjas were hated by Samurai. The History Channel did a extensive documentary on it... 3. Kenpo Karate: unarmed martial arts training. 4. Tae Kwon Do: also unarmed combat ( I think this originates in Korea). 5. Go Ju Ryo: Mentioned on both Scarlet's & Quick Kick's file Card. I have no idea what this is... I can only assume it involves using a sword. 6. Bali Song: Mentioned on Torpedo's File Card. I have no idea what this is... 7. Akido: this is a purely defensive martial art, that involves blocks, throws and usuing your opponents energy against them. Steven Segal and Life Line are masters of this art. 8. Southern Praying Mantis: mentioned on Quick Kick's File Card, I have no idea what this is... 9. Tai Chi Sword: mentioned on Quick Kick's file card, I have no idea what this is... 10. Wing Chun: Mentioned on Quick Kick's File Card. Sounds like its Chinese. I have no idea what this is either. 11. Capoeya: martial arts dancing from South America. 12. ???????: I forgot the name of it, but its a Philipino martial art that was used in the Borne Identity movie serries. It has been refferenced on the History Channel, Yes it is real! 13. Sagat: French Martial Art refferenced on the History Channel and GI JOE ARAH season 2 episode with the martial arts tournament. ...Since Larry Hama wrote the file cards, and he did do lots of research, I assume these names refer to actual fighting styles... Kendo is done with a Boken, a wooden sword. Kendo is the sport version of Iaido which is the art of Samurai Swordsmanship. You wear a pretty cool get up and are awarded points for things. Basically, its Eastern fencing. Ninjitsu, Ninjutsu, Ninpo--thats your Ninja right there..Ninja means "Assasin" I wont get into the entire history lesson, and there are MANY variables when you talk "historical Ninja". But yes, stealth, silent, employing various tactics...having a bad ass white suit with a red Cobra on it....Ninja Karate-meat and potatoes martial art, usually fought in a very linear manner. Tae-Kwon-Do is the closest you will get to boxing with your feet. Korean martial art, employs much more of rounded "ring" movement then something like Karate, which again is somewhat linear. Go Ju Ryo or Ryu-As far as I know is simply another form or variant of Karate. Bali-Song is the appropriate name for "Butterfly knife" you know the one you can do all the tricks with? Very fitting tool for a guy like Torpedo. Akido-Known as the gentle martial art. isnt so gentle when you bum rush someone and they throw you 50 ft behind them...uses the opponets force against them. Developed by a guy WAY over the hill, cool history, effect art...big fan. Southern Praying Mantis- Praying Mantis is a form or "shape" in Kung Fu...you can actually put your hands in the way of a Praying Mantis to begin to simulate it...of course its MUCH MUCH deeper then that. "Southern" is probably what area it came from...I have never heard it distiniguished geographically. Tai Chi- Is very crazy, believe it or not after MMA, Muay Thai and Escrima class..."Combat" Tai-Chi kicked my ass the most. It is used for breathing, concentration, over all health and yes can be applied to "combat" techniques which would include a sword. QK is no joke. Wing Chun-I believe is another sub-art of Kung Fu, Wu-Shu, Wing Chun..I may be wrong there. This was a crash course, I do study a bit though, hope it helped! |

A ninja is much more than martial arts and therefore cannot be taught as a discipline. Ninja will use and and every mean necessary in their surroundings to accomplish their mission. They will use martial arts, weapons, animals, bombs, smoke, and anything laying around.
The closest discipline to a Ninja is probably Jeet Kune Do or the art of both many and no styles, Ninjitsu is an attempt to organize everything but a true ninja would lose the element of surprise following a strict discipline Anybody own the Ninja books from the 80's?? I have The Mystic Arts of the Ninja by Stephen Hayes. It teaches you how to blend yourself into the background and disguise yourself

I've never heard of just a martial art making you a ninja. Ninja's are about killing people, stealth and martial arts. They aren't defined by one form of martial art over another. Martial artists only use their martial arts talents, they aren't necessarily stealthy or fatal.
define:ninja - Google Search
